2019 Women's Lacrosse
Tribe off to a great start this year at 5-3. Elsa Rall (goalkeeper) just won the CAA Defensive Player of the Week. Belle Martire (midfielder) just won Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row.

Congrats, ladies!

Congrats, ladies!

Hopefully they finish better than their 0-8 run after a 4-4 start last year.

Congrats, ladies!

Congratulations to Belle Martire for earning CAA Rookie of the Week for the third time this year! The writeup says: "Martire currently ranks second in the CAA in goals per game (3.0) and leads the conference in game-winning goals (3)."

RE: 2019 Women's Lacrosse
Congratulations to three Tribe freshmen who garnered CAA awards in women's lacrosse:

Belle Martire, Starr Howard, and Lauren Russell were all named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. In addition, Martire was named to the CAA Second Team.

Strangely, Kaley Thompson of Elon was named Rookie of the Year. This is the extent of her write-up on the CAA website:

"Elon’s Thompson is just the second Phoenix to earn CAA Rookie of the Year honors after Stephanie Asher in 2015. The two-time CAA Rookie of the Week finished the regular season second on the team with 31 goals and led Elon with 59 draw controls."

Contrast that with this info about Martire from Tribeathletics.com:

"One of the league's top players, Martire ranked tied for second in the CAA in goals per game (3.0) and tied for first in game-winning goals (3). Additionally, her 3.27 points per game ranked seventh in the conference.

Honored as the CAA Rookie of the Week three times, Martire tallied a team-high 49 points and 45 goals with a .511 shooting percentage. Additionally, her impressive goal total equaled the program's freshman single-season record.

The Houston, Texas native registered multi-goal efforts in 13 of 15 games this season, while she posted nine hat tricks. Her best performance came in the Tribe's win at Longwood when she totaled a career-high seven points (6g, 1a), as her six goals equaled the seventh-best single-game effort in school history."

So, Martire scored 45 goals to Thompson's 31 goals and Martire won Rookie of the Week 3 times to Thompson's 2. Thompson does have 59 draw controls; however, Starr Howard herself (see bio below) had 79 draw controls, so maybe she should have been ROY.

So, between this and the women's tennis, there was some strange voting going on in women's sports in the CAA this year!

"Howard quickly established herself as one of the CAA's top players during her freshman season, as she ranked fourth in the league in draw controls per game (5.27) and tied for seventh in caused turnovers per game (1.33).

Howard posted a team-high 79 draw controls, which shattered the previous single-season school record (59)."

RE: 2019 Women's Lacrosse
The three Tribe freshmen are the core of what is building to be a strong program the next several years.

Several very strong players coming in, too.

I believe 5 conference wins in 6 years for this team. Presumably they have a full allotment of scholarships. That, combined with these solid individual performances means they should be able to achieve a much better team result.

But the HC, who has been here all 6 years, still has a job. Go figure.

Well, they did fire an asst coach (male) who recruited Howard, which the way things are operating over there, makes perfect sense.

This obituary of Stuart Cawthorn was in today's RTD. I did not know Stuart but she sounds like someone who would have been very interesting to know. I am a little surprised that the life remembrance is this week since she died last November. RIP, Stuart.

Just like a new GM coming into an NFL or NBA front office. If they are going to sink or swim, they want their people in the key positions.
I'd say she is pretty much there.

I can confirm there's no head coach employed by the College for frisbee.

Lacrosse gets a commitment from 2021 Justyce Barber from Tampa. She is the daughter of broadcaster, UVA star, and long time NFL LB Ronde Barber. I wonder if UVA offered? Sounds like solid pedigree and a good family to bring into the fold. New LB coach?
