Nancy Mulkey gets a photo in this story (and also at the bottom of the page, ACU's Lexie Ducat is in a photo with one of her ACU teammates).

thank u, next: Rice to take on Marquette in first round of NCAA tournament

Owls deserve better than 12-seed

Editors’ column: Rice Athletics must prioritize Langley

Cut class and head to College Station on Friday

Love that the Editorial Board for the Thresher is telling students to cut class.

I really hope students take the advice - Rice making the NCAA tournament in either men's or women's basketball is not something they should take for granted. And with the drive so short, they could actually create some sort of home court feel. Hoping to see a few hundred students turn out.

Nice articles. Good to see the support.

Just wish they hadn't used the phrase "unprecedented success". 05-nono

Ironically also at #5, Marquette men are down by 15 to Murray State with 15 minutes to go.

Murray St is good this year, they defeated Belmont in their conference tournament. Plus they have JA.

Do we have a Ja Morant on the Rice women's team? I dunno - he's pretty darned good. I mean, Erica Ogwumike and Nancy Mulkey are pretty special players, but I don't think they're at that level. It does show that you building a program in men's basketball in doable in a non P5 conference. Morant wasn't an academic casualty who ended up at Murray State - no one from the major conferences recruited him outside of South Carolina (where he is from) and they didn't go after him as hard as some other recruits. So he was a top-250 to top-300 kid who ended up at Murray State.

Another preview - good write-up on both teams.

I'd say the one key for me is does Marquette go all small (all 5 players under 6 feet) and try to take Mulkey out of the equation by (a) full court pressing us a lot, and (b) force Nancy to have to guard a perimeter player on defense? I think that's what I might try if I were them, but if we can handle the pressure, Mulkey could have a huge day and get some of their key players in foul trouble. Their alternate strategy is to just play us with a traditional big girl, and just go through a couple of their bench players on Mulkey.

I'm also hoping (a) we have a nice crowd, and (b) the A&M fans there root for Rice.

I'm not sure they have the depth to press on a regular basis. The do run their offense at a VERY fast pace; certainly the fastest pace we've seen so far this year.

12-seed Murray State blows away 5-seeded Marquette on the men's side 83-64. Let's repeat the 12 - 5 upset tomorrow. 03-cloud9

It's also worth noting that CUSA women's teams are probably going to end up 4-1 tonight in the WNIT (and CBI). And that's with 3 of them having to go on the road. The most impressive victory belonged to Western Kentucky, which went on the road to beat Miami, Ohio (a top 50 RPI team) by 4.

Marquette's collapse was shocking. As recently as a month ago, Marquette was #10. They were also up by two games in the Big East with four to play. They looked to be for real.

But out of nowhere, after going 12-2 over the first 14 conference games, the Golden Eagles lost their last four. Then they went 1-1 in the Big East tournament. And they put the cherry on the steaming s*** sundae by getting smashed by Murray State. So that is 1-6 over the last seven games after starting out 23-4 with some good wins. Sure, they had some injury issues, but... that is a pretty alarming finish.

I will tell you right now that Marquette's problem is their coach. No matter how much money they spend on basketball, no matter how many good recruits they get, until they fire that Duke "bro" Wojciechowski (who is in no way suited to a program that is to this day synonymous with the legendary and entertaining Al McGuire), Marquette will continue to come up short.

Marquette's women's team has gone through some similar struggles down the stretch, but that is almost entirely because they lost Davenport. Regardless, I suspect that at this moment, Marquette is very fragile psychologically, so we need to go for the throat from the opening tip.

I feel like we're either gonna with this one or Marquette's gonna win by 15+ and run us out of the building with their tempo. We saw some vulnerabilities to their style of play in the first half against MTSU, so it's gonna be fascinating to see how Langley gameplanned in a relatively short period of time.

Marquette can guard our perimeter people, and they are absolutely not going to let Ogwumike in particular beat them. For our offense, I think it will be same thing we saw against MTSU: Mulkey holding and trying to get a shot when she can't find an option on the outside. I accordingly expect to see Langley moving Mulkey around to different places outside the lane so she isn't always constrained by having to make a decision in under 3 seconds. Maybe Langley can use this to slow the game down a bit as well.

Langley's approach to stopping Marquette will be interesting to see indeed.
