Looks like ESPN leaked the women's bracket early. Rice is a 12-seed and will face 5-seed Marquette in College Station.

Marquette is a 5 seed (if the leak is correct). Ridiculous seed for the #21 ranked team in the country but the good news is (a) the games are in College Station which will help the Rice contingency, and (b) Marquette isn't playing great basketball as of late (they went 3-3 in their final 6 regular-season games, with losses to Butler, Creighton and St. John's).

For those who don’t closely follow the Rice team... we lost by 11 at Texas A&M early in the season before we had CUSA tourney MVP Mulkey available (injury)

It’s most definitely a winnable weekend (and the one I’d hoped we’d be sent to) but we will need a more consistent 40 minutes than we played in any game last week to escape College Station unscathed.

A%M aint that good. In fact that whole league is no where near what it was 2 years ago. Big Nancy can make a difference there.
I too thought they should be a 8 or 9 seed.

Sounds to me like Marquette got screwed.

We’ll see... but I had the same thought.

Based on our AP ranking, the press thinks we’re “good enough” to be a 5 or 6 seed. I agree with that, but know that’s not how seeding works. 8 would be a fair seed based on RPI. 10 if you want to say we haven’t beaten any top 50 teams. The 12 seed I will accept gladly as that ticket to College Station. Would rather be a 5, but will take it, especially given Marquette’s slide and injury issues. I think they dropped us down a couple notches as a nod to travel.

12th seed is more of a slap in the face to this conference for Rice then ODU getting a 14th seed.....

but them thar lady vawls got in with a losing conference record (in 5th-rated conference), with a better seed than Rice

It will change if Rice keeps winning and the conference plays more P5 schools during the season.

On the surface it might look like a huge slap in the face.

Dig deeper and the committee handed us almost a best-case scenario.

1.5 hour drive
Play in an arena we’ve played in twice in the last two years
Paired with two teams who’ve suffered key injuries (one of which, Marquette, has definitely dropped off since)
Opportunity for a second round rematch against a local rival
No AP top-ten teams in our group (three top 25’s though)

This one’s wide open, something that you don’t often see in this tournament.

Committee: we see that you lost on the road at A&M by only 11 and at UCLA by 9 (our first two games, both without Mulkey).
We’ll give you a mulligan to go prove yourselves.

If we’re as good as we’ve looked on our current win streak with Erica and Mulkey both at full strength, then we have a real shot at Sweet 16. Maybe the best shot of any team not hosting first/second round games.

Vegas would probably say that Marquette would be that team, since they are a 5-seed that was recently projected as a 3. They open as 10.5 favorites against Rice Friday.

I don’t know much about Marquette but I do know we can compete against anybody outside the top ten. Their fans worry about their interior defense and I expect that Mulkey will be able to do things Friday that WKU and MTSU were able to deny in Frisco.

Rice led by 9 with 2:45 to go but had zero legs left. We lose in overtime. Ugh.

Hell of a ballgame. Nip and tuck the whole way and both teams playing lights out defense. We got that late run to go up by 9 points but then got out scored 13-0 and lost by 2 in OT.
We even got tons of good looks late but just couldn’t convert the shots.

Reminded me a bit of the 48-42 Rice ODU game this year. Except that Marquette’s rebounding was just stellar.

Also Marquette started four seniors and Rice started one and Marquette would have been a even higher seed but lost to DePaul in the Big East finals in the closing seconds of the game.
