Thought there were a couple of friendly whistles in the final quarter (Smith's drive, maybe Wiggins' jumper) but didn't see anything egregious.
I thought there were a ton of close calls that could have gone either way.
They didn’t always go how I would have guessed.
Over the course of the game I would have said these balanced out.
No more than one or two ‘weird’ calls that went against each team.
On the other hand I remember at least two questionable calls that went against the Owls. Langley discussed both with the ref. In both cases, we ‘got’ the next borderline call.
Same thing I've said when we were the ones complaining- such is life, good teams find ways to overcome such things.
Refereeing wasnt the reason they got throttled in the second half.

We only lose one senior from the starting five. We'll be even better next season. Pay the coach.

RE: Rice WBB vs. MTSU - CUSA Finals
If what skills and talents she has suggests a sustainable model, by all means match offers and lock her down. Maybe women's basketball can be the foundation upon which we rebuild the athletics reputation here.
By sustainable model, I mean you do not want a Tom Crean situation. Crean has built his reputation by managing to get a generational talent (Dwayne Wade) while he was at a school who could take a non-qualifier. He has used that boost to carve out very good other college jobs where it has not worked out so well.
I am NOT comparing our women's coach to Tom Crean. I would just make sure before proffering a 10 year contract I would make sure this current case of success is something we can keep doing (and it certainly could be), and not something that is difficult to repeat. Maybe the strategy is being a haven for 3 and 4 star players who leave Texas and are not happy with their first school; that works for me, as I am sure there are plenty, and if we are good for long enough, we will begin to cut out that middle step.
There is no reason Rice could not continue to be great in women's college basketball. If you do a ven diagram of schools with great reputations, where the degree means a lot in the academic and employment market; beautiful campuses, and successful basketball programs, that would be a small number. Rice could force its way into that small group, with maybe Stanford and Vanderbilt and Duke. It isn't as if you will lose too many recruits who are in college only to hone their skills for a professional career.

Langley turned around the program BEFORE Erica or Mulkey played a single game. She took the talent she had on what had been a 9-win team and made a 20-game winner out of it within 2 years of arriving on campus. And next year's incoming recruiting class is the best we've ever had (and a Top 50 ranked nationally). And recruiting will only get that much easier after our success and national exposure this season. I really don't think "sustainability" is a question so long as Langley remains at South Main.

Then by all means, let's prove to the world (or at least those on this board) that Rice University has a commitment to excellence in athletics that is equal to its excellence in academics. Let it start with a highly successful women's basketball program, and let our other coaches strive for the success that this program has.

RE: Rice WBB vs. MTSU - CUSA Finals
Over 19 years at three schools, Tom Crean has a record of 367-252, with 9 trips to the dance and 4 to the NIT. I think most of us would be ecstatic if over the next 19 years our basketball program (men or women) went 369-252 with 9 NCAA and 4 NIT appearances. And I doubt we'd mind having the kind of football success that his father-in-law and two brother-in-laws have had.
Would I rather have John Wooden than Tom Crean? Yes, absolutely. Would I rather have Tom Crean than what we've had over the last 19 years? Absolutely. Would I be happy if Langley stayed 19 years and turned out to Tom Crean? Absolutely.

Tom Crean leveraged his Marquette job into a job at Indiana, where he got fired because he came into a very good program and made it pretty good. Bill Curry was 26-10 as a head coach at Alabama. Oh my gosh, I would take a 3 year record for football at Rice of 26-10, wouldn't you? That 26-10 record does not mean he was a talented coach at Alabama; there is a context here.

Tom Crean also didn’t take over a very good IU program... The program was a dumpster fire and he had to resurrect it... Indiana fans are a lot like Aggie football fans (delusional).
Also, he made the tournament three times at Marquette after Wade left..
Not saying Crean is a great coach, but he’s a good coach.

Crean replaced Kelvin Sampson at Indiana, so we know what kind of very good program he came into there. I'm not saying he's a great coach, and I definitely wouldn't say that about Curry. But I'd take his record over what we've had. And I definitely would not be disappointed if Langley and/or Pera stayed here and matched it.

Let's not overthink this. She's a great coach. Extend her contract and pay her some money, or she's gone for sure. I can promise you that others around the country can see her value.

I think it's not too early to be paying attention to other college basketball head coach positions opening up on the women's side. So far, the Penn State one is the only high profile one we know about? I don't know if Langley will be in the mix there (I've seen a few articles talking about potential replacements and her name hasn't been on any of those). But I would be very concerned if Auburn's coach (Terri Williams-Flournoy, a Penn State grad) got that job. Langley is an Alabama native.
JK and Langley had a long hug after Rice won the title yesterday. Maybe he was whispering to her the new contract details?

Pay the lady.
There is no evidence to suggest she is a bad coach who is getting by based on talent (a good example is the fact that she was able to guide the team back after being down by almost 10 at half time).
But JK should definitely be keeping his eyes open and aware of other top talent, should Langley get an offer that is too good to pass up.

Exactly what I propose too. Make her the best offer you can right out of the gate. Don't hold anything back for negotiation. Tell her exactly what you can and can't do. Make the very best possible offer. If she gets other offers then make that decision as hard as possible for her to make. Or looking at it another way, make it as easy for her to choose Rice as possible.
We can't control what she does or what other schools offer her, but we can control what we offer her and when we offer it.
All that being said, JK needs to have a list of potential replacements ready before the coaching carousel starts turning.

Read the twitter comments by her players and the parents of those players if you need any additional reason to redo her contract.
