RE: Interesting Tidbit from South Carolina Board of Trustees Meeting
Some interesting comments from Jimbo this week:
“I know they’re looking at some formats going forward that, you know, keep the three main and rotate five and all those things,” Fisher said. “I think it is good for your players, eventually, to be able to play everybody in the conference. I really do believe that. I mean I think that’s good, to have that, that you’ve played that team or been in that stadium, and those things, but when you have conferences as big as you have now, that’s kind of the way it goes.”

Keep 3 and rotate 5...it's not my favorite, but it's far superior to what we have.

Divisionless, 8 games with no permanents, 9 games with or without permanents. All would be improvements from my point of view.
It makes sense both from a fan/player experience point of view as well as a financial point of view. Smaller budget schools would benefit more from having the Alabamas and Floridas of the league visiting more often and we'd get more gigantic matchups like LSU/UGA or Auburn/Florida that we rarely see under the current setup.
MEDIC concur, I have not heard Mizzou complain at all being in the SEC East. The complaints come from non-Missouri sources still trying to advocate for the B10 in this regard. Given Mizzou's location, there's a bit more travel for locations such as South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, but those schools and fans appear very comfortable and accepting to playing Missouri as a divisional foe. It has become normalized. There's even the friendly Columbia (SC) to Columbia (MO) Mayors' bets.
Missouri came into the conference happy just to be invited. We were happy to sit in the seat given to us. I have never heard a complaint about entry into the East. I hope we can stay, but changes will probably be made eventually. Either way, this is hands-down the best conference in the country.

To be honest if some version of this plan ever happened I wouldn't mind Missouri staying as one of our permanent rivals. It's been a pretty evenly matched and interesting series with some truly crazy finishes.

(03-15-2019 10:14 AM)Gamecock Wrote: Usually these things are a formality and very boring, but outgoing SC President Harris Pastides dropped an interesting nugget at the very end.
The conference has voted to commission a study for football scheduling. There are some schools that want to keep traditional cross division rivalries (but some that would like to see it be more of a rotation. It's something they'll revisit at the AD meetings in Destin.
“We voted to continue to study football scheduling,” Pastides said. “It’s a potentially very divisive issue - we’re talking about the inter-divisional competition that has Texas A&M be our so-called permanent Western rival. Several of us, we’d rather see more rotation, and really that’s for student-athlete well-being.
President Harris did not seem to be implying "divisionless" as much as dropping most or all permanent cross-division opponents.
If Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia continue to play their non-permanent rivals 1 out of 6 years, the other 5 teams in each division can drop permanent cross-division rivals and begin playing one another 2 times across those same 6 years. It'd be a simple rotation.
OR, they could do something like the Big Ten has where stronger teams from each division play one another slightly more often than the weaker teams (and vice versa). This could be a 5-year rotation where teams have 3 "more often" cross-divisional opponents. There are a number of other options here, but I don't think these would be considered over simply dropping 5 or all 7 permanent rivalries.
