Surprised if 10mil

GoR was probably only an extra 1mil anyways

In my mind...

AAC : "we want 10 "
ESPN: "only with a GOR"
AAC: "cant get 'em all to go for that"
ESPN: "here take 8"
AAC: "ok"

Not educated on TV stuff. Can AAC give ESPN Tier 1 and Championship game and take other to open market? What realistically can they get on open market for Tier 2-3 and rights to other sports?

Say ESPN pays $4-6 mill. Can you get $2-3 in a "a la carte" type offering?

We would not have a deal at this point for a 4-6 deal. There's nothing about those figures that should motivate the AAC not to at least try the open market . What ever the final amount is, it's enough to to realize no one is going to beat it.

Sometimes it feels like Aresco’s loyalty is his former employer CBS and that CBS/ESPN long term deal.

Next week or so could potentially put that announcement past the ESPN exclusive negotiation window and involve other networks (Verbal agreement but will be signed after March 2nd).

If C. Austen Cox can hedge his bet then I will do so as well!!! 03-lmfao

Did he say March 2nd on the show? I don't think he would have opened his mouth if it wasn't already signed. Just figured the announcement would be next week.

Hopefully ESPN was scared of the unknowns that open market would create and made a decent offer to keep us.

The deal is most likely an ESPN exclusive... Greater than 8 million otherwise the two parties cannot say anything until the end of the 30 day window (March 2nd).

If ESPN would have made an offer that the Conference couldn't accept, that offer would be the starting point for negotiations on the open market per stipulations in current contract.

I guess we are all in with ESPN

Sounds like they aren't saying anything until the end of the window (announcement not until next week).

Math isn't some peoples strong points here. About a week would easily put us in the open market period.

My guess is if we don't sign with ESPN's starting bid we will take offers for a few days, come back with counters and then agree in principle with someone.

It's not like the other interested parties haven't done their homework. Once the exclusive period ends it's just an auction. All the homework is done, who has the best offer shouldn't take overly long to work out. In fact starting March 2nd the longer it takes the better. That would mean heavy competition for the inventory otherwise we'd take the ESPN offer if the other bids aren't great.

Rudd interview:

https://929espn.radio.com/articles/audio...dd-jj-show

Discussion starts about 5:50.

Sounds like it's an all-in deal with ESPN. He agreed with a characterization that in a week to 10 days, we'll announce what our deal is over the next 8-10 years. Just did not sound like a piecemeal announcement of a Tier 1 deal.

Sounds like there MAY be some differentiation between schools, as he says the contract specifically recognizes the value of the University of Memphis.

PS I hate his use of "absolutely." Such a weak word. Makes me a little worried.

I'm not sure I would read that much into it. He represents UM and it seems a matter of course that any school president would say that about their school and the contract. I could see the president of SMU or Temple or anyone saying that, in effect, it's a good deal for them.

If he supports the contract amount he really couldn't say anything different.

I said MAY.

You know, there was that report that came out late last year that some schools might get more in return for signing a GOR.

PS. This thread title is misleading. He definitely said there WOULD be an announcement within a week to a week in a half. Not COULD.

Hmmmmmm

What would be the benefit of waiting? If a deal was signed we'd here the reports of agreed to. That's not what was implied.

What is implied is that everything will wrap up in a week or so. Not that things are done.

Well then why would the Memphis guy be so pleased? Probably because as we all know we can't sign for less than ESPN offers. So he would know what the minimum amount the conference could get was.

I never understood why mystery books and shows ever did well the more I am on the internet the more I get it though.

My assumption is they have an agreement in principle, but you give the lawyers time to go over the contract. Announce sometime next week when it is actually signed.

Thanks for posting. After listening, I'm reading between the lines that this deal could have been completed more quickly because ESPN has leverage to enhance the package with other non-financial offerings such as:
--new or modified bowl affiliations in those properties the network controls;
--new football and basketball match-ups for primetime with schools in P5 conferences that are contractually connected with ESPN;
--other inducements, such as an annual P5 conference challenge in basketball.

It appears we'll know all this very soon.

Is this TV deal only for Tier 1?

When can we start negotiate Tier 2 and 3 deals with media?

https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Jour...s/AAC.aspx

Source: new deal could be 3-4x ($6-8M) if top properties commit to the conference.

https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Jour...media.aspx

Predicts 4x ($8M) even without a GOR.

I don't know how you can listen to Rudd talk about how the contract specifically values Memphis without relating back to these issues.

It may be something as benign as "If Memphis, X, Y, or Z leave the conference, the deal is null and void." Kinda like the Class A, Class B members in the current deal.

Sounds like it's an all-inclusive deal.

ESPN may have paid a premium for our Tier 1 to get our Tier 2/3 on ESPN+.
