The WAC doesn't need to nurse another Cal State school along so they can join the BW after a few years. The BW is the weaker conference so let them hand hold and sponsor their own new members

All I need to know about CSU LA is their home attendance of around 200 for home games last year. Pathetic. The admins may want D1, but apparently no one else cares at all about their sports.

This CMU news certainly is amusing.

Oklahoma City U is another interesting possible add to the WAC. Former D1 member, long outgrown the NAIA. We!l funded sports and facilities now. Nice private school, in a big metro area like lots of WAC schools, law school, good reputation. I think they may be interested now because they used to be in a nice little rough NAIA conference that was very local. Now a lot of defections to D2 has left them in a much weaker and more spread out conference. OCU is now very out of place

The Big West tries to keep a balance between the California State programs and the University of California programs. Cal State Bakersfield was only able to get into the BWC because the BWC wanted UC San Diego as a member. That is why Cal State Bakersfield is stuck in the WAC waiting two years for UC San Diego to make their D1 transition to the BWC.

I've heard that. But I still hope the WAC never takes any California public schools unless they actually want us as a long term destination. Their balance is their problem. However, I understand why we needed Bakersfield at the time.

If not for Sacramento State's football needs (to remain in the Big Sky) the WAC might have not lost Cal State Bakersfield to the Big West. However, with the additions of UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield to the Big West, their membership is will be at 11 schools. Until they fill the slot for the 12th member, the WAC is vulnerable to losing any state funded California school (they might add) to the Big West.

After this episode with CSUB, I don't believe there is any interest amongst the UCs or Hawaii in adding another Cal State. So y'all are free to bring up Cal State LA.

I also believe that any BW 12th member will come from outside California as there's just nobody left in-state or in Hawaii worth bringing in.

Now, we got confirmation that CSU-Los Angeles were approached.

Dixie State, Metro State, Tarleton State and CSU-L. A.

CSU-L.A. were an all sports Big West member until the early 1970s. They would be moving back up.

I am surprise that the WAC would ignore Colorado Mesa since the town they are in and around the area actually growing just like St. George. They would not have troubles attracting people since Metro State would have Air Force, Denver, Colorado, Colorado State and Northern Colorado in the Denver area.

St. George and GJ have nothing in common. Absolutely nothing.

Agreed, and the people of GJ do not really want D1. As I have explained GJ people are content with D2 and the JUCO series.

As for Western State, uh no.

I think that Colorado Mesa would be good for the WAC. However I don't know if the people of Grand Junction are looking for more sports in their area. A little over a year ago a proposal was given to the voters to fund an arena that would have been big enough for an ECHL hockey team (and one would have been moved in). The voters turned it down.

That proposal was in April 2017 and it was easily defeated by a 2-to-1 margin. The arena was for an ECHL team and a G-League team.

ECHL and G-League isn't the same thing as the towns own school looking to move to a higher level.

I used to live there. GJ is weird regarding sports. They have the JUCO World Series, a minor league baseball team and D2 sports. They are very content with that. A lot of people ski, hunt and fish, and a lot don’t care for traditional sports. They are however, huge Bronco fans.

Would the residents in GJ be more open for Colorado Mesa to move up and get some local D1 teams come to town? It could help with the economy. Colorado comes to Grand Junction to take on Colorado Mesa. Bus trip and manageable drive from Denver. Of course steep climb going through the mountains.

David,

Colorado might do that as soon as Mesa is included in the PAC13.

To rational readers, I doubt it seriously.

This is a joke, right? But sadly this suggestion has been made before except it was Arkansas Tech hosting the pigs. The Buffaloes will never play any sport in Grand Junction. The Falcons, Rams, and Pioneers might play in GJ for swimming or tennis with little or no chance for any other sport and definitely not football. The Bears are the only one who would be willing to travel to GJ in any of the major sports.

The only schools that could "help the economy" have their own TV networks with national cable TV reach, and they have perhaps a 20-year master plan of ditching the rest of D-1 if they can get away with it or finally break from the NCAA.

That is to say, as I've just read another article from my local paper about the Pac-12 and their business practices, that the Pac-12 isn't one of those conferences. So to even assert that a Pac-13 with Colorado Mesa would work- THAT is wrong. Had to be said.

There is such a thing as being loyal to the school- and therefore, by extension, being loyal to your rivalries. In amongst all the realignment over time, schools that have failed to move well have forgotten that principle. Sometimes you'd rather just hate Pueblo than get to know Orem. (I'd have said that about Fort Lewis, but Durango is hard for me to hate)
