I could see Cacock on the bubble also. I do see JWF on the first team, I just don't think that scoring is the only stat that matters. I do see him in the NBA. He has a game built for one on one play.

This x 1,000,000. How can you be a top 10 center in the nation and not make the first team in a mid major conference.

RE: NATHAN KNIGHT
If Nathan and the Tribe put up 2 good performances this week, I think there can be no argument. The Tribe would then be 8-8 and assured of finishing better than UNCW and have a split with Charleston. That, along with the metrics of each of the players would all go in Nathan's favor. Right now though, any Cacok voters have his insane rebounding and the fact that he significantly outplayed Nathan in their one previous head to head matchup this season. Granted, Nathan has taken things to an entirely different level since, but that is the argument fans have for Cacok over Nathan. Personally, I would put both on and leave off Brantley, taking Riller instead. But perhaps the last spot is actually between Pusica and Brantley. I only know that when we play Northeastern, Pusica seems to be the best player on the floor every time. JWF will be the player of the year, but Pusica still might lead the Huskies to the tourney title.

Anyway, unless Knight somehow falls completely out of sight in the next four games, it will be moot and he will be a definite first teamer. If his next four games equal his last two games, I agree that he is definitely in the conversation for POY. There are (at least) four other stats besides PPG and Knight is excellent in three of them. Wright-Foreman is good in only the one. (Also, I don't think FG% is as meaningful for post players. Two years ago Cacok led the nation with 80% (almost all dunks)).

Think his intent was who was projected 1st team preseason for their conference and anything less was listed as "not projected."

Hmm, maybe, but, if so, that is either confusing (most likely) or deceptive. That is, a 2nd team projection is NOT the same as not being projected at all. A guy studding out who was not projected at all is a better story than a 3rd or 2nd team projection exceeding expectations or a 1st teamer matching expectations. Besides, bottom line, I thought Nathan was snubbed by being ranked as 2nd team and had hoped that it would motivate him (and, who knows, maybe it has).

Think MrJ was pretty clear when he stated before his list: "How is there not a concensus that he will make the CAA all-conference 1st team? How many of those guys won't make 1st team in their conference?"

From the Charleston game preview article:

“Knight has turned in an impressive stat line this season, averaging 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 blocked shots per game. Since 1992, former No. 1 pick and NBA MVP Tim Duncan at Wake Forest in 1996-97 is the only player in college basketball with a season stat line of at least 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots per game. Knight has been even better in CAA games, averaging 21.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Since 1992, no CAA player has averaged 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game in league action.”

Those lines you quote are pretty clear in talking about 1st team at the end of the year (not preseason 1st team, which is the part that I was commenting about). I guess we can agree that a better way to word "not projected preseason" would have been to say "not projected preseason first team".

Man we can be inanely pedantic on this board sometimes.

The intent was very clear in mrj's post.

I was pleased that Nate made it in to the final 10 for the Abdul-Jabbar watch list. Now though, if he keeps up this statistical pace, how can he not be the front runner for this award? Politics aside, if you are the only big to put up similar numbers to Naismith winner and NBA hall of famer Tim Duncan, I'd think he'd have to win.

As a Tribe fan, I'm used to disappointment. It will probably go to some kid from the Big 10.

Knight is now tied for 2nd in win shares in CAA play with JWF and just behind Riller. He's also got the highest PER of anyone with more than 4 minutes of CAA play.

Thank you for that statistics combination. I went in thinking JWF is by far the best in the CAA, and you're trying to convince me otherwise. I think when the Preseason POY does well and is on the first place team (even if Hofstra blows that they're much better than you), he'll win POY, but I'm fine with votes for Knight. I also thought Riller was clearly the second best guard. Now I see that he's close to Pusica. I think Riller scoring much more (albeit with more shots) and not having missed any games makes Riller better, but it's close. In addition to missing 7 games, Pusica is worse than last season. You could debate whether Knight or Riller will be Preseason POY next season.

(02-20-2019 07:29 AM)dan10 Wrote:  Who is arguing that? The top 3 are clearly a combination of JWF, Cacok and Knight.
I disagree. Cacok has a horrible assist/turnover even for a forward. Among forwads, I'd take Knight and Carter over Cacok. I might take Brantley and Seibring over Cacok also. Seibring shoots so many threes that it's hard to compare him to other forwards. He shoots threes .391.

Here are my teams in no particular order within the team:

Wright-Foreman, Knight, Carter, Riller, and Pusica

Cacok, Brantley, Seibring, Pierce, and Demir

Mosley, Fobbs, Santa Ana, Pemberton, and Gresham or Roland (it's hard to pick the second best on Northeastern because Roland scores more but Gresham has way more rebounds and assists)

Harper leads Drexel in scoring, but he doesn't shoot well or get many rebounds or assists. I didn't include anybody over 5 assists who aren't great scorers. Toews and Wynter don't shoot well. Buie shoots well, but I don't think he does enough to give Hofstra a third player.

It is also likely that Knight won't win because he is a junior. Everyone will figure that he can just go ahead and win it next year. Of course, if voters are going to think that way then the award honchos should just limit the field to seniors only. If based on merit alone then Knight would seem to be the frontrunner.

As will the center position on the Virginia All-State Teams, annually done by the Times-Dispatch and Roanoke Times (not to a Big 10 player, obviously, but to a Va Tech or UVA player). I figure Kerry Blackshear, at Tech will probably get the nod at center on both lists, not because he is better than Nate (he is a very good player, just not as good as Nate), but because he will sell more papers and get more "clicks" for the newspapers by the legions of Tech fans, than a kid from little William & Mary.

Such is the bias with sports coverage in Virginia.

On another Nate topic, on The Basketball Show (Fridays on ESPN-Richmond) they discussed Nate's play and the way Tony uses him on the high post. One guy (a former long time coach) said by using Nate at the high post, causing the opponents big man to leave the basket to guard him in space, it makes him almost unguardable when the Tribe runs specific plays for him. It is too easy for a big guy, with Nate's mobility and ball handling, to go right by any typical big man defender.
It is a tactic used by Shaka Smart for Jamie Skeen, also an agile big man, in their run to the Final Four.
