In 2016 the basketball team got in trouble with the NCAA (a staffer doing players' homework?). In early 2018 HC Reggie Theus and AD Dr. Martin got in a fight, and the university president dismissed them both. He was looking for a new job at the same time UMKC was looking for a new AD (if I understand everything correctly). He sounds to me like he really knows what he is doing as an AD at a mid-major. Already it seems he has brought energy and vision.

Last year in the midst of budget cuts UMKC did a study on athletics which considered going down to d2 or even d3. I think the hire of Dr. Martin shows that is not going to happen. I think it shows commitment to d1. Dr. Martin didn't travel from California to be AD of a d2 school. UMKC is not going to play in the same conference as their next door neighbors, Rockhurst Univ.

Dr. Martin at least had the backbone to try breathing life into CSUN athletics and Theus himself gave Martin credit for it. While the splashy hire of Theus didn't work out, it did set the stage for CSUN to hire Mark Gottfried, their second attempt at bringing excitement to basketball.

Sometimes a fresh start is needed and it looks like UMKC and Dr. Martin were the right match.

RE: UMKC 100 day vision
This is a podcast from a Sioux Falls radio station interviewing the Summit League commissioner, Tom Douple.
https://kwsn.com/podcasts/sports-talk-wi...sibility/#

The first 13 minutes is about the decision to move the conference basketball tournament (and then the SL headquarters) to Sioux Falls. Then he talks about the state of the conference at 13:40. At 14:00 talks about PFW likely leaving at some time. At 15:25 talks about WIU. At 16:20 talks about the Illinois schools in general. At 17:00 he is asked about a 10th team to the SL. He mentioned at 17:40 it would be nice to have another soccer team.
At 18:50 he talks about UMKC: he is clear that UMKC is welcome back (they do have a soccer team, their sports are aligned with the SL, he says there is no hard feelings between SL and UMKC). To my ears he sounds pretty "gleeful" at the prospect of a UMKC return to the SL. I think the red carpet is out for the Roos. Of course, he speaks in generalities, nothing specific at this time.
At 21:50 he talks about the possible entrance of Augustana (they are in the midst of studies and need to decide about certain sports, ie, football).

I found a picture on UMKC's website that shows how tight their space is (click on it to expand). I'm guessing the width of their track is 2 or 3 lanes. On the right side under the basket they have created a VIP section this year (not pictured, this picture is from 2017). I think they have waitstaff for the tables, maybe drinks are served? Maybe someone who has been to Swinney can say.

UMKC has hired local sports architectural super-firm Populous headquartered in KC (practically across the street from UMKC- 7/10ths of a mile walk to Swinney) to give them some ideas on improving their space. But I think it will be mostly cosmetic (although that's not bad). To see the list of what Populous has done worldwide check wikipedia or their website: populous.com. Very impressive company.

I listened to this and he said they would welcome back UMKC, but that they had a new AD and a new Chancellor and he had not talked to them. He also mentioned, in a related topic, the fact that there is a $1 million exit fee for any schools that decide to leave. IUPUI paid that fee. UMKC would pay that fee if they joined and then left. UMKC in the past has indicated interest in the MVC, but the MVC has not shown the same interest back.

PFW would like to leave for the Horizon, as everybody knows, but the Horizon apparently is not interested in expansion at this time. If PFW left, the Summit would drop down to five baseball and 5 men's soccer schools. So adding Augustana would at least bring a baseball school. He did not seem to know if the Presidents were on-board with the idea. A fifth Dakota school has its advantages and disadvantages.

What caught my attention was Douple talking about how the Summit League needs a soccer school. Most people have focused on SL's need for a baseball school, assuming that FW will leave at the first chance. But FW also takes away a soccer team. Some have speculated that the SL was demanding that UMKC starts a baseball team in order to get an invite. But UMKC would bring a soccer team and so that has value in itself. I remember reading that being in the WAC adds over $200,000 a year to UMKC's travel budget. So in theory being in the SL for 4-5 years is a break even in regard to a $1 million exit fee, more than 5 years and they are ahead.

If UMKC wants to be in the Missouri Valley, good for them, I hope it works out (I am listening to the MVC tournament right now-- Go Drake !!). But it is not likely that a team that has been to 1 post-season tourney in 32 years of D1 basketball (the CBI in 2017) & that draws 1000 to their games at Swinney is very attractive to the MVC right now. But with their new AD...and maybe a new coach...and a chancellor who seems to realize the value that a good basketball team can bring to the school...maybe in a few years...??

RE: UMKC 100 day vision
It's kind of sad for umkc. They only want to be in the Valley, but they really have no chance. A lot of schools want in the Valley, the Valley is trending east, not West lately, and in feel UMKC has very little to offer any conference, other than being there. Maybe the Summit values their location a little, but geographically, they are in a no man's land.

They didn't need to hire Dr. Brandon Martin to get into the Summit league. Any AD could accomplish that. Getting into the MVC, that will take a lot of work. Martin said that his goal is to get UMKC in the top 100 in athletics and in basketball. If he can accomplish that goal in the Kansas City market, now UMKC becomes attractive. He is also going to need to increase fundraising. He did save $150,000 per year by moving back to Swinney.

The WAC has no exit fee. Paying a $1 million exit fee to the Summit when that money might be needed to join the MVC would be a mistake. The Summit is a lateral transfer at best. Their top ranked basketball team by NET ranking is South Dakota at #100. Their second best is Omaha at #168. Those are the only two in the top 200.

The WAC has NMSU at #46, GCU at #90, UVU at #92, CBU at #165, UTRGV at #174 and Seattle at #188. The WAC has better markets. The Summit is a Dakota league and not as attractive for recruiting.

On Douple talking about the need for a soccer team, my guess is that there may be a concern about Eastern Illinois. EIU is cutting athletic scholarships and maybe he feels it is just a matter of time before they drop men's soccer.

RE: UMKC 100 day vision
Here is the picture.

UMKC does not have the budget to add baseball. Buy, they would replaced Fort Wayne for soccer.
Augustana does have baseball that the Summit needs for keeping a bid.

The talks or rumors are that both schools would be invited maybe starting 2020/21 seasons. This would mean the WAC would lose a team.

While Martin had plans in place to hire Gottfried, he actually didn't do so as Martin and Theus were both fired simultaneously before that could happen. So technically speaking, Gottfried was hired by CSUN's president.
