How many youth players even know Highs coached at UC. Parents do not care either.

Yes, they do.

Bull! Co-workers kid was D1 recruit. UC did not offer but family wss hopeful they would. When both other coaches heard that they would negatively recruit by saying "your kid only wants to play defense? No offense?"

Kicks style of play is the biggest negative in recruiting because 99% of AAU kids don't want to play defense.

You guys are funny. Always complaining that the Enquirer doesn't cover UC. Then the lead columnist, whom tons of people read, does a weekend column that basically relays and then elaborates on Cronin's statements, and you gripe about that.

Oh well in light of a single anecdote you picked out I suppose I can just go ahead and assume it applies to every other recruit too

RE: Doc Article (Mick's recruiting)
The part I actually focused on the article was Cronin's comments on the academic side. I agree many people don't give that side of the house alot of credit, and feel the quality of the programs is somewhat underrated. Part of it may be Cincinnatians not wanting to toot their own horn, but just look at some of the top rankings many of the majors/colleges at UC receive. Some are noticing though -- I believe I saw on another thread about the football PWO list, and one of them did mention UC meeting their academic needs as a contributing factor to sign. Like the supposed recruiting stereotypes, I suppose the commuter school ones can be hard to shake too.

UC has a very good reputation outside of the 275 loop. Inside of 275 entities, such as the Enquirer, paint the university in a negative light. This piece reeks of Cronin giving us his yearly reason why he cannot land major recruits and PDouche doing his usual slam UC column.

Don't worry Bearcat Nation, I got your [stabbed] back! Already penning the article in tomorrow's edition about how the Cats couldn't win when it counted and blew their chance to climb in the polls. Xavier's drop off was expected because Mack left but Cronin can't hide behind an overachieving team any longer.

Best,

It is hard to be a hero in your hometown.
It is a little bit harder when you have true local rivalries salting the discussion.
Xavier is a real BB rivalry. And I still remember when the UC-X football game was a big deal.
Miami was a real FB rivalry until recently.
This all tends to "salt" the discussion of UC here at home.

Note that some other schools we like to talk about don't have this local rivalry issue. O$U, UM, and UKy have rivals, but the closest of those is UK-Louisville at about 50 miles. Not the same media/fan situation (large hometown blocks rooting for the other guy). And frankly, UC's sports history in the 70's and 80's didn't help our long term perception much. We are not always being judged on the last 10 or 20 years.

And finally - I agree, Doc can be a real idiot.

Don't forget the UK and OSU contingent within the metro area as well.

I agree with all of this. Both the local perception of UC compared to the national one and also Cronin's excuse making. Biggest issue with recruiting is style of play and IMO not having good enough recruiters on staff. Blaming Huggs for any of this is ridiculous.

I did not mention the Pro Sports competition that UC gets for media attention. I think that affects PDoc's views also.

I remember several interviews/articles where Bob Huggins stated/complained that UC was treated much like a pro team from the media. We really are not treated that way OSU gets treated in the Columbus area, or UK is treated in Lexington, or either IU or Purdue in Indy.

And I reiterate - Doc can be a real idiot.

Huggs was right. The guys who cover pro sports have a built-in cynism the college scribes do not emote. Further, things that are important to someone who covers the college game are not important to guys who cover the college game (ex. Read the papers in Hartford, Orlando, Memphis and Dallas and there are stories about the conference all the time. You never see that in Cincinnati).

Ex#2 Does any of the msm in town cover UC recruiting? Mo Egger, who is a UC fan, thinks it’s all silliness. Doc probably feels the same way.

Huggins developed an out of control thug image that to a certain extent still lives on. The Xavier brawl didn’t help matters as it just piled on to the image UC wanted to leave behind. We get that reminder every year for the Shootout.

With that said, if there was ever a school that deserves to shed the thug image, it’s UC. The price it paid for both keeping Huggins then dumping him and was extremely steep.

RE: Doc Article (Mick's recruiting)
Outside of Cincinnati, I am not sure a thug image exists. This is mainly local fodder. An image originally created locally and adopted nationally. When I am traveling, individuals never bring that up. Many talk about great we used to be. How intimidating we were as a basketball team. All comment on how much fun it is to watch our football team.

I am not sure how hard it is to be objectively liked in your hometown. This is where you should have the most support, regardless of other entities. Eggs has no where near the student body or alumni that UC has. Eggs has no where near the history UC has. Does Cry-ami’s athletic dept still exist? They receive absolutely zero coverage. Frankly, it is lazy journalism. We should expect more.

RE: Doc Article (Mick's recruiting)
Dallas, Houston and Memphis all have major league sports yet those hometown papers seem to provide excellent coverage for our fellow AAC members--game day and beyond. This is a failure of our media inside I-275 where high school sports have an inordinate share of coverage.

I've often wondered what folks think after relocating here when they see more buzz about high school games than about the 44,000 student University in town that's had ranked football and basketball teams much of the past decade.

Regarding the "thug" image out of town, I'll agree it's not as pervasive as it once was. But a false notion, once accepted is difficult to shake. As a hypothetical illustration, consider if a player is arrested today at Miami (FL) or UNLV. Many sports fans will have a knee jerk reaction attributing the problem to a "rogue program" or "athletic department out of control," when the facts may not support that case. Problems that fed that image began more than 30 years ago. An image, once damaged, takes considerable time and effort to rebuild. To UC's credit, it has been about that work for some time now. But a single setback, such as "the brawl" was perceived to be, brings out the naysayers. Old perceptions die hard.

I'm not sure what this means, but I'll take it on face value and believe it to be a reference to weight. Being that you used the plural of the word, it implies there must be at least 2 tons of readers, or at least 4,000 pounds. Assuming that is readership is primarily male, and knowing the average US male now weighs 197.9 pounds - it tells me he has at least 20 readers.

Sounds about right.
