Drexel strikes big TV deal with NBC Sports Philadelphia
https://drexeldragons.com/news/2019/2/7/...vents.aspx

It was just announced today that Drexel will be televising 10 upcoming home sporting events on NBC Sports Philadelphia or NBC Sports Philadelphia Plus.

This does not include the upcoming Drexel/Delaware men's and women's games which will be on NBC Sports Philly as part of Delaware's TV package.

The 10 games include 3 MBB games, 2 WBB games, 2 wrestling, 1 WLAX, and 2 MLAX.

So starting Saturday, every Drexel MBB game and 3 of the last 4 WBB games will be televised.

This is a really big deal for Drexel, who was clearly lacking local TV exposure with the CAA losing their TV deal.

I'm just hoping that they bring in an NBC Sports crew and announcers to broadcast the game. I don't think that we want to be exposing Rob Brooks and Tubes to the masses.

It is a nice get for the locals and to try and drum up some local interest.

I do not mind Rob Brooks. I think Tubes has done a great job in the past before going to the announce table, I am not sure I care for him as an announcer. But like Ari on the women's side, one can improve quite a bit. I couldn't stand Ari for a long time. Too much of a homer for my liking, but he has greatly improved upon that and is actually a decent announcer now. Much more level on the game. Tubes can improve upon this too as he gets more experience. Rob can improve upon this as well, but he does a fairly good job announcing the game and being biased, but not overtly so. The W&M announcers of the past have this big issue too, being such big homers that they are insufferable to listen to.

Here's what I heard about the new TV deal. These broadcasts will be Drexel's webstreams on TV. Rob Brooks will be doing PBP for the men's basketball telecasts and I'm assuming that Ari Bluestein will be doing PBP for the women's games and the lacrosse games. The deal was in the works for a couple of years now but the quality of Drexel's webcasts were not up to par to be put on TV. The folks at NBCSP had been watching the broadcasts and the improvements and finally gave Drexel the green light to put them on TV.

Now the Drexel/Delaware telecasts were a joint venture between the two schools, and an outside production company was hired for these broadcasts. I believe that the same announcers who announced the DU/DU game at the BOB will be announcing both men's and women's games this month. They had a slight Delaware bias but were generally pretty impartial.

I don't think that these games will be blacked out on CAA.TV.

I never thought that Rob has the voice to be doing play by play. It's a very monotonous voice. He has very little emotion and can put me to sleep. He's fine for when he fills in on Phillies pre and post game shows, but play by play isn't really his forte. Fortunately, I've been to every home game this year, so I haven't had to listen to them at all.

I'm a bit bias toward Ari because he's a friend of mine, but I do think that he has a bright future in broadcasting, and I really enjoy watching the WBB broadcasts when I'm not at the DAC. I do like that he shows emotion. All of the homer broadcasters in the CAA do that. He makes it interesting.

I guess that is just a difference in opinion on what you expect or want from a play by play person. Emotion is fine, slight bias is fine, but straight being a homer to me I do not care for. As I said, Ari has improved considerably, probably because he has covered non-Drexel games so that has helped. Being monotone doesnt bother me that much.

What does bother me is people who do play by play and hardly do play by play. They rather talk about everything else and have conversations with their partners instead of actually talking about what is going on in the game in front of them. I know some did not care for the team that did the Elon game, I personally thought that announcer was one of the better ones. He was obviously being braodcast as the announcer and radio play by play guy, but I thought he had a good voice for it and stuck to a reasonably unbiased approach and you always knew what was going on

And I will add another comment that wont sit well here, as a non-Philadelphian, Dan Baker was awful. I know he is beloved for his past, but from when he was still here at Drexel I could not stand to listen to games with him on the mic. I did. But it was brutal.

Criticizing Dan Baker is unacceptable and I won't have it. It's like criticizing Cal Ripkin to Orioles fans. Dan was a professional play by play announcer. He had a friendly voice, and his broadcasts were lively and entertaining. The only issue that I had was that since he was so much of a homer, when he complained about a referee's call, I couldn't tell if it was really a bad call, or if he was exaggerating. But I still wish that he was broadcasting games on the webcast. Dan was at the game sitting on press row on Thursday. I'm wondering...just wondering, if maybe he's coming back to broadcast games for Drexel now that they are going to be televised. However, Brooks and Tubes are listed on the game notes as the announcers for today's game.
