Not sure if they all will travel to the CAA tourney but it was good to get Herring confident, Crump some work and Mullier in there. Hawks will need to have some arms step up and it has to be more than just the weekend starters/main relievers.

Our biggest issue has not been pitching. It's been errors and the lack of run production. We have had 4 to 5 errors in games this year. We have left a lot of runs in scoring position and a number of miscues on the bases. Pitching, on the whole, has been pretty solid. I've watched our pitchers pitch their way out of bases loaded situations too many times this year.

In spite of the 5th seed, this is a very winnable tournament

Yep, and we’ve won this tournament as a 5 before. 2006, I believe.

RE: 2019 UNCW Baseball Thread
Looks like Northeastern's top starter, and potential opponent on Wednesday, is junior righty David Stiehl. Back when we faced the Huskies in April, he was operating out of the bullpen, only to return to being the Friday guy the rest of the season.

Stiehl threw a 3-hit shutout against Charleston on Apr 19 but got blasted the next week by Elon for 5 runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. He then rebounded to pick up wins in each of his last 3 starts against Siena, JMU and Towson.

Overall, Stiehl is 6-4 with a 4.52 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 57 K's and 29 BB's in 67.2 IP.

Given Stiehl's up and down performances, it's certainly possible that NU opts to go with Saturday starter Sean Mellen, who has been the Huskies' most effective pitcher all season. The junior lefty is 5-2 with a 2.85 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 107 K's and 37 BB's in 85.1 innings.

Yeah, that’s a big time award. Especially in such a tough season.

Indeed. Excited to see where he gets taken in the draft on June 3rd. Scalf did a great job of prioritizing Jones' draft stock. That's how you get elite talents to forego the draft out of HS and come here.

Jones is the 7th player in Seahawk history to take home a CAA Player of the Year award (below is the list), 6th under Scalf, and 3rd in the last 4 years. Another feather in Scalf's cap as he heads into retirement.

  1. Trent Mongero, 1989
  2. Battle Holley, 1994
  3. Bryan Britt, 1996
  4. Mark Carver, 2008
  5. Nick Feight, 2016
  6. Casey Golden, 2017
  7. Greg Jones, 2019

Congrats also to Kep Brown and Cole Weiss for reaching the 1st Team All-CAA and for 2nd Teamers Jackson Meadows and Noah Bridges!

The right side of the infield has been a real problem from day one but they seem to be playing better at the right time. The timely hit is something a ton of teams struggle with and it shows up more often when you make errors or bad plays to extend innings byt he other teams.

Jones Named NCBWA All-America

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Former UNCW standout Greg Jones, now with the Tampa Bay Rays organization, was named All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Jones, a third-team selection, continued his impressive awards haul having been named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, All-CAA First team and was named first-team All-State by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association earlier this month.

In 2019, Jones, who joins 25 former Seahawks to earn All-America honors, led UNCW with a .341 batting average, 543 slugging percentage and a .491 on base average while tying a school record with 42 stolen bases. His 70 runs scored led the CAA and ranks him among UNCW's single-season top-10 leaders.

The Cary, N.C., native became UNCW's highest draft pick in the program's history when the Tampa Bay Rays selected him with the 22nd pick overall.

ABCA All-America Honors For Jones

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Former UNCW standout infielder Greg Jones earned his second All-America honor when he earned a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings third-team squad.

Jones was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America team earlier in the week.

Jones adds his second All-America nod to an impressive season haul that included Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and tournament Most Outstanding Player awards and first-team All-CAA and NCCSIA (All-State) honors. He was also an ABCA All-East region first-team honoree.

The Cary, N.C., native was selected with the 22nd pick overall by the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this month and has signed with the organization. He is playing with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League.

Way to go Casey. That is great for him but in my view the greatest play ever from him was his almost miraculous catch in center against ezu. Thus snuffing a pie-rat rally. Not sure if it can still be accessed on u-tube.
