D1Baseball CAA Preview
D1 Baseball has been releasing their 2019 conference previews and they released the CAA preview...

William & Mary

William & Mary is coming off a disappointing season, going 3-21 in the CAA and batting just .220 as a team (294th out of 300 D-I teams). This year the Tribe’s rebuilt roster brings higher expectations. Matt Trehub (.132/.202/.158) is a solid defender with a strong arm behind the plate. Collin Lipke (.246/.340/.437) brings a big bat to his spot at first base. Matt McDermott (.227/.277/.278) is a top of the order type who can run. He will play second. Zach Pearson (.252/.281/.320) is a solid defender at third base. Kyle Wrighte is an intriguing talent at shortstop. The outfield features freshman Matt Thomas, speedster Brandon Raquet (.208/.291/.383) and Owen Socher (.234/.355/.273). Hunter Smith (.254/.299/.432) is a powerful bat from the DH spot after leading the team in batting, home runs and RBIs.

The pitching staff will lean on Wade Strain (2-5, 4.80), an upper-80s righty with a good cutter and solid curve. Bodie Sheehan (2-9, 4.50) is a four-pitch mix lefty with above-average command. They should be joined in the rotation by Jake Haney (1-7, 4.50), an upper-80s righthander with a swing-and-miss curve, and Nick Butts (3-1, 3.83), a three-pitch mix righty with good movement and command. Jamie Sara (3-3, 6.35) brings a low-to-mid 90s fastball with a putaway slider to the closer role. Chris Farrell (2-5, 4.44) is an upper 80s-to-low 90s righty with plus stuff, although his command needs improving.

Thank you for posting. Does D1 Baseball have inside info on what the lineup/rotation will look like or are these roles conjecture?

I have no idea how we'll be. There wasn't any real reason I could see for our drop off last year, I hope we bounce back this year but it's hard to say.

RE: D1Baseball CAA Preview
We played a lot of kids last year who weren't ready for or capable of playing D1 college baseball. Sometimes when your recruiting pipeline dries up or you have kids leave early this happens. I can't see a marked improvement with this team. Maybe some freshmen will step up big. Wrighte is a good player. Getting him back should help

Ha! No disrespect meant at all, TDF, but (.132/.202/.158) , (.246/.340/.437), (.227/.277/.278), (.252/.281/.320), (.208/.291/.383) and (.234/.355/.273). sorta wraps it up pretty well.

We really do need to find some offense this season.

What struck me funny about last season is wasn't it the first year that we had the new indoor hitting facility? Who knows, maybe it is too cushy and the guys forgot how to hit outside?

Haha fair, I more meant heading into the season nobody expected our offense to drop off so much. New hitting facility, not a ton of graduations, and a pretty decent recent history.

RE: D1Baseball CAA Preview
Well, at 15-23 they weren't exactly world-beaters, but they were respectable and had a few decent wins. Then the bottom just dropped out.

Haven't seen anything like it since the Orioles' start in '88, although that's probably because I haven't been paying attention broadly enough....

RE: D1Baseball CAA Preview
I don't want any more sugar coating. Last year's team was horrible.

I'll give you a few stats that make it obvious:

Team ERA - 5.00
Opponents - 3.21

Team Batting Average - .220
Opponents - .273

Team On base % - .302
Opponents - .368

Slugging - .315
Opponents - .385

Steals - 18-34 (53%)
Opponents - 88-123 (72%)

So we didn't hit, didn't get on base, didn't hit for power, couldn't steal bases (yes we were behind a lot), gave up a lot more runs, and couldn't hold or throw out base stealers. They had 2 good wins the entire year (Maryland and Wilmington). They got swept by Quinnipiac for god's sakes. Don't tell me about how they beat ODU twice....ODU sucked last year too.

No they don’t get into lineups and rotations. They couldn’t know all of that from every team.

Well I guess there's nowhere to go but up!

Big season for Murphy to prove last year was a fluke and not the beginning of a trend.

No they don’t get into lineups and rotations. They couldn’t know all of that from every team.

In the text you posted they project the rotation (Strain, Sheehan, Haney) and the starting position players, including having freshman Matt Thomas, a catcher in high school, playing the outfield. How would they choose to put Thomas out there - pure conjecture based on the Tribe needing OFers and that Thomas’ high school performance possibly means he has the bat to start as a freshman or have they talked to Coach Murphy and he gave them an idea of how the roster is coming together?
