Mick said post game he prefers to stay unranked so the teams stays hungry.

I disagree with that way of thinking.

Agreed... there's no reason for a top 15 all-time basketball program to play the underdog angle every got-dang year.

If UC is unranked, we should be hungry for a ranking.

If UC is #23, we should be hungry for the top 10.

If UC is in the top 10, we should be hungry for #1.

I agree with you, and I'm glad that you were able to find a negative angle after today's game.

RE: Temple gamethread
I spent this afternoon driving around town. Saw the first half score and with early 0-9 shooting from three point range and thought, "Oh great, another crappy road performance."

Then next chance I had at the radio the Cats were only down 6. Sounded like the defense kicked in and the offense got a little better.

Finally, was able to hear the last eight minutes of the game. All I heard was what sounded like hard-nosed play that would be really fun to watch (it was fun enough to listen to).

The fan in me just can't understand why they can't play hard and smart all the time. The human in me understands only too well :)

Never would have guessed we would have a chance to see 18-3 after that Ohio State game. Just like I never guessed the football team could do so well after last year. It has been a great six months to be a UC sports fan, even with the occasional OSU or ECU debacle thrown in.

Our defense keeps us in games when our offense SUCKS.

Then, when our offense unsucks itself, we can win games like this.

A team like IU's defense sucks right now and they are finding that they don't have a chance in heck of winning a game if their shots don't go in.

Man, we just brutalized Temple in that 2nd half. It was beeeeeauuuuutiful .

With the win today, Mick is now 79-14 (.849) in the regular season since 2016/17. He is 39-5 (.886) in conference play during that same span. Let that sink in. The NCAA frustrations aside, the Cats have absolutely dominated the conference the past 3 seasons. Still 10 games to go this year but glad that our program remains at the top as others in our conference attempt to knock us off the perch. The Cats haven't lost since the ECU road game. I like how this team responds to adversity.

I also liked how Mick responded. He seems to have learned from the Nevada game that the leader has to maintain composure or those under him panic as well.

Agree. I noticed in today's game he was calmer than normal. I don't know if someone slipped him a sedative in his gatorade but it was a nice change.

We all get frustrated from time to time and call out Mick for being stubborn. But on the flip side, he's definitely no dummy. He clearly has perspective, as shown in his relationship with his daughter and his commitment to coaching players to be as great off the court as they are on it. I have no doubt he learned a lot from the Nevada game and has tried to change some of those habits as a result. I'm sure I'll be back on here bitching again whenever we lose our next game because I'm an irrational fan and I overreact to everything, but I think Mick deserves some credit for what he is pulling off this year. This has been a fantastic coaching job to date -- the team is 2-3 wins ahead of what I expected at this point.

Wow that rebounding margin.

You can argue with Micks phliopsophy, and I have my issues, but what you can’t argue with is his ability to get the team to execute his strategy. Rebounding that well against a decent sized team in Temple on their home floor is big time. That takes effort and intensity to pull off.

This is a big Q1 win that will help UCs resume a bunch.

man, you sure can tell what type of game it was based on the game thread. i tell ya. no, let me tell you. ordinarily such a close score between somewhat evenly matched opponents would warrant a fourteener for you mountaineerin' hanks out there. it's as simple as folks, now, i haven't read the whole thread, folks was seeing how we were likely to get blown out on the road (great song title) they just got back to making their butternut squash quiche and tried to forget about that whole mess. but curiosity bested them and you began to praise the squad once again

i think terry nelson and mo i hate xavier egger would make a perfectly fine tandem once hoardy takes over as the voice of the reds. i assume that becomes a committed gig. whatever. i really like terry nelson. i wonder how he'd do coaching

Could not watch the game, but followed it as best I could from my phone. That is a good win. Temple is always a tough out, especially in that house of horrors in Philly. Glad the team was able to overcome an early deficit. I always like the games against Temple. They play hard nosed basketball.

Yeah, I had no idea Temple was 5th on the all time wins list. Philly is definately a tough place to play. Much respect to Coach Fran but happy the 'Cats pulled out a win.

Conference looks ripe for the taking, doesn't it? Be interesting to see how Houston handles success going forward.

It's sad it took him that long to figure it out. I'm not really going to complain about regular losses. It's a long season and you're bound to have some bad games. Those losses/games are where you learn how to win in March so I'll wait until then to judge the season.

RE: Temple gamethread
Very important victory in this year's campaign; both the game story and this commentary (below) from the Philadelphia Inquirer speak to the toughness and rebounding prowess of our Bearcats yesterday.

Temple is a potential NCAA team this season; a program with considerable tradition and a tough out on their own court. I'm glad our guys have a week to enjoy the victory rather than lament a loss.

The long march to an NCAA invitation isn't over yet, but it took a big step forward yesterday. Congratulations to our coaches on a solid game plan and our players for executing and an amazing job on the boards.

I know I have been critical of Mick in the past. I noticed this as well. He was calm on the sideline. My hope is everything he has learned will reap some huge rewards in the future.

As calm as old John Wooden, rolling up his notes as he watches from the bench.

Seriously though, I think it's a change for the better. I still expect him to be demonstrative at times. But in the heat of battle in these close road games it has served him, and the team, well this year. Let's hope it continues in March because so many of those games come down to the final few possessions. It's a positive indication of his trust in this team and the players' ability to do what is necessary to take care of business in crunch time.

Wasn't it just a few games ago that Brooks was literally carrying him away from the ref's during a blowup over a bad call?

I don't think we have seen the last of mean face cronin!

Kind of. He apparently got t'd up for something tiny. Then flipped out after a quick second t when he was trying to figure out how he got the first .

Either way don't mind the bursts of intensity. Balance is key.
