He might end up being quite the steal. He was a starter at Lawrence North High School as a Freshmen. The same high school that produced Greg Oden and Mike Conley.

The only knock I'm hearing is his shot needs a lot of work.

A good overview by an IU fan site

RE: BB Class of 2020
The one thing i keep hearing about this kid is how fast he is. He is very, very up tempo. He's not really a perimeter shooting pg. Much more of a push the ball driver and passer. I think it's a good indication of what Brannen likes to do. He wants an "attack" type pg. Another indication our days as a half court offensive team are in the rear view mirror. If you see some film of him, it will be obvious.

Good to see Brannen have success with a kid from Indiana. Mick kind of ignored it, or struck out. Not sure which. Lot of good players over there.

Bad D can be said about 85% of HS Stars. D is a lot about motivation.

RE: BB Class of 2020
How does Saunders compare to Justin Jenifer and Logan Johnson? All three 247 rankings are comparable. Admittedly I don't follow recruiting too much.

Mike Saunders 0.8951 composite ranking. Overall: 164 PG:32

Logan Johnson 0.9000 Overall:192 PG:31

Justin Jenifer 0.9017 Overall:153 PG:27

Can we expect about the same contribution/skill sets? From what I've seen and read Saunders appears to be a quick aggressive player who still needs to work on his shot. Sounds a little like Logan Johnson.

I guess what I'm really saying is I'm glad we got Saunders but he appears to be no better or worse than Logan and Jenifer but it seems we as fans are clamoring more over him than the previous PG's UC had on the team. What am I missing?

I think it's a "first new guy" type thing...but the composite is a weird way to measure him, as Rivals seems to have not re-evaluated in quite some time. He's measured as a near 2* guy there, whereas ESPN have him as the #92 prospect in the country. The other thing I would mention is that he went toe to toe with Cole Anthony (went for 22/6/7 in their game), something that neither of the others had done at this point. I think he is probably comparable as a level of recruit as Jenifer (which you'll remember everyone was VERY excited about getting when he did sign here), but a very different type of player.

I don't recall fans being unhappy with the recruitment of Jenifer and Logan Johnson. I thought they were both good pickups. If anything, most of the complaints about Jenifer were about him not contributing on offense (which did eventually happen his senior year) and Mick Cronin misusing his talents in his offensive system. I agree that Saunders is on par with those guys, and while he's not a can't-miss prospect, he can do really well here with the right coaching.

Brannen's been on the job a couple of months. Getting some solid recruits this early is about all one could reasonably hope for. It will be interesting to see how he does coaching the team this year and how his recruiting evolves.

This is a key point. With this guy in particular he seems to be trending up, but even if he's a Jenifer/Logan Johnson recruiting ranking level recruit Brannen is showing he can recruit at this level and still time to build relationships and bring recruiting up a level.

What's different? What do you mean what's different? It's pretty simple. It's a new era of Bearcats basketball and fans are energized. That's why idiots like me and you are wasting so much of our time on twitter and message boards in June.

If Cronin stayed, do you think this board or twitter would be nearly as active? No.
Hence, when Brannen signs a recruit of course the response is going to be greater than if Cronin did.

Nobody is claiming Saunders to be anything more than a solid 4 year player. Are they?

I guess to answer your question, what you are missing is hope. Or Mick, or maybe both....because most fans seem to be overly excited with the fresh start, myself included.

Agreed. There isn't a difference in recruiting (at least so far), the difference is fan engagement and perception because of the new coach.

What are you talking about? Logan Johnson was uber-hyped (way overhyped IMO) on this board and all the other UC boards when he committed.

I was eh normal mick recruit when Logan Johnson committed. After his first game in like 3ish minutes against the bucks I was pumped about him. Seemed to have the Bearcat swagger (whatever you wanna call it) that Hicks, Maxiel, Justin Jackson, etc all had.

But I do agree with your point that UC boards were excited to land Johnson. Jenifer was a solid recruit (top 150ish) if I remember correctly.

I agree with that. I think the vast majority of posters would have preferred he stay. I loved his hustle and fearlessness. Even if he never develops a great jumper, I think he will be a plus defender and a guy who will be able to finish in transition.

I saw that yesterday to, and i wondered if it was correct or not as i had not seen us mentioned with him earlier. Maybe a tie in to an assistant or Saunders? Very stealth.
