Won’t be long until that tradition dies as another casualty of our pansy ass culture which is growing in this country.

It already fell victim about 10 years ago. We were able to pressure to get the traditional back.

It was about 30 students. What campus doesn't have this element? *shrugs*

I like App's tradition of "Black Saturday" although, initially that referred to EVERY Saturday when App played. We used to put billboards up in Winston-Salem before our games with Wake Forest advertising when Black Saturday came to Groves Stadium. Now it's just a designated game each year. I still have trouble wearing anything other than black to a game and only grudgingly comply with the requests for other colors (gold or white).

App has a lot of great traditions. Yosef's rifle, the bands march up Stadium Lot, The Tennessee Waltz pre game, Bugler's Dream played for kick offs, Black Saturday, App State chant, etc.

The two that have been lost over time are the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug, and the student Yosef.

Erk Russell used to headbutt his players to get them fired up. This famous picture is of him when he was the DC at UGA with a bloody forehead:

There is a bust of Erk at field level in Paulson stadium that the players still headbutt during pregame

Yosef hardly ever fires the rifle any more. ROTC guys handle that after App scores.

In 1994 when we played at New Hampshire in the playoffs they wouldn't let us fire the gun. Police walked our cheerleaders behind the stands and discharged it before the game. They wouldn't even let us have it on the sidelines.

I get a chuckle whenever someone brings stuff like this up. Thirty students out of a 18,000 student body is a mico-minority. They were being laughed by everyone headed to the game.

Pistol Pete, the Oklahoma State mascot carries two Ruger Blackhawk revolvers. I haven't checked but I bet some places don't let him carry them.

We had traditions. Then the PC era dawned. Now we're trying to make new ones.

RE: Football Traditions
That rifle looks like a Hawken which would not be traditional for an Appalachian Mountaineer. I know because I own a Thompson Center Hawken which appears identical. A fairly expensive rifle BTW.

The one in the older monochrome photograph does indeed look like a traditional Kentucky Rifle.
