1979 was a fun year to be a 22 year old Pirates/Steelers fan. I remember it fondly.
City of Champions was the promotional slogan adopted after that year.

1979 is a year i remember fondly as well, but for personal reasons. Lots of "firsts" came that summer and fall to my 15 year old self.
But athletically, as an Orioles fan and a Rams fan, it was a great year that ended very frustratingly in both cases. Oh, and I was also a Bullets fan and they lost the 1979 NBA finals too. Can't forget that.

About 6 months later, the Knicks won their first NBA title, too. Those must have been good times to be a New York sports fan.

Probably not for most. Most NY sports fans then (and now) were Yankees and Giants fans, not Mets and Jets fans, so to them it sucked pretty bad to see the other team win the titles. The only thing that brought them all together was the Knicks.

Very fair point. I've been to a few Yankees games, and every time the bleachers would have a chant that ended in "AND THE METS STILL SUCK!"

Sounds like a sports fan nightmare.
Funny how the market is large enough to support the Jets, Mets, Nets, Islanders, and Devils who all lag well behind the Giants, Yankees, Knicks and Rangers in support

How tribal is it based on location within the NY metro?
I would imagine (just guessing) that Long Islanders prefer the Mets/Nets/Islanders. The population of Long Island is 7.8 million people.
I would also think that New Jerseyans prefer the Jets/Devils. The population of the New Jersey suburbs is 6.6 million.
Those places are bigger than all but the biggest 3-6 cities in the country.

As a kid growing up in the New York area, we had to get our pride stoked by major league baseball. The Rangers and the Knicks were perennial losers, and the football Giants weren't yet good. But we could always count on the Yankees, the Giants and the Dodgers. When the latter two moved to the West Coast, all I had left was my loathing for the Bronx Bombers.
It hasn't been the same since.

And if you were a Dodger or Giant fan, you generally became a Mets fan. People who hate the Yankees generally hated them forever.
