on the espn 100 he was 97 on the "final ranking" but a few top 100 2019 recruits reclassified last minute to 2018 and pushed him right below the line

Ah, didnt realize that.

Yep, he was top 100.

Don't know if you have ESPN+ but here's the article when he committed.

He's got a lot of talent and under a coach like Sampson he'll improve and develop into a great player.

RE: Basketball Recruiting
Also, as a caveat to recruiting rankings.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that it's the position rankings that are more important.

For example Hinton.

He was rated by ESPN as the #29 SF in his class.

It obviously great to land high rated recruits, but what if you have 8 PF's in the top 10?

If you sign 5 of those PF's is getting 5 top 10 rated players that great? Front court is good. Maybe one is a stretch 4 and can shoot the ball a little bit. What about the 2 guard or PG positions? What happens when a true 3 just outclasses the PF on him because he is even better playing on the wing in his true position.

So Hinton at #29 is a great get.

Class balance is important. Fit to the system is important. Chemistry is important. Coaching is important.

That's honestly why I am excited about DJ, Dandridge, and Wiseman. We know they fit what Penny wants to do. I have no clue if that style is going to lead to success over the course of a season or is sustainable to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. Other recruits we are in on also fit the system. One of the biggest things that used to irritate me about Josh Pastner was he would seemingly recruit a number. He would have a bunch of high rated guards and play slow even with a 4 guard set. He wanted to play fast and press but couldn't teach it.

He recruited Nichols to come here and instead of run the high low which worked really well with him, he often went away from it. I was always wondering, what are you trying to actually do Josh? Play fast? Play slow? Half court? Press? Look to create transition opportunities? It was always weird and confusing.
