According to the BJS report, “More than half (56%) of prisoners who possessed a firearm during their offense had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it off the street or from the underground market (43%). Fewer than 1% had obtained the firearm at a gun show (0.8%).”

Despite the new round of so-called “Assault Weapon Bans” being introduced in Congress and several state legislatures, the survey found that handguns were the most common type of firearm used or possessed by criminals in 2016. Perhaps lawmakers should spend less time on these “solutions in search of a problem” and more time on fixing the background check system, or on any of the issues that voters actually rank as a priority.
