Exasperated Democrats try to rein in Ocasio-Cortez
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/1...nt-1093728

Quote:Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is already making enemies in the House Democratic Caucus — and some of its members are mounting an operation to bring the anti-establishment, democratic socialist with 2.2 million Twitter followers into the fold.

The effort, described by nearly 20 lawmakers and aides, is part carrot, part stick: Some lawmakers with ties to Ocasio-Cortez are hoping to coax her into using her star power to unite Democrats and turn her fire on Republicans. Others simultaneously warn Ocasio-Cortez is destined for a lonely, ineffectual career in Congress if she continues to treat her own party as the enemy.

“I’m sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there’s almost an outstanding rule: Don’t attack your own people,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). “We just don’t need sniping in our Democratic Caucus.”

Incumbent Democrats are most annoyed by Ocasio-Cortez’s threat to back primary opponents against members of their ranks she deems too moderate. But their frustration goes beyond that: Democratic leaders are upset that she railed against their new set of House rules on Twitter the first week of the new Congress. Rank and file are peeved that there’s a grassroots movement to try to win her a top committee post they feel she doesn’t deserve.

Even some progressives who admire AOC, as she’s nicknamed, told POLITICO that they worry she’s not using her notoriety effectively.

“She needs to decide: Does she want to be an effective legislator or just continue being a Twitter star?” said one House Democrat who’s in lockstep with Ocasio Cortez’s ideology. “There’s a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress.”

It’s an open question whether Ocasio-Cortez can be checked. She’s barely been in Congress a week and is better known than almost any other House member other than Nancy Pelosi and John Lewis. A media throng follows her every move, and she can command a national audience practically at will.

These are not times to assume that a political grifter like AOC can’t continue to be successful.

There is a difference between being a Twitter star and a legislator. My guess is she strongly prefers the former to the latter. Typical "look at me" millennial.

True radicals and true Marxists make crappy teammates. I'll lose no sleep. You reap what you sow and in politics that means you reap what you endorse!

RE: Exasperated Democrats try to rein in Ocasio-Cortez
AOC is where the democrats want to take the country, but most are too afraid to say so because of the impact on their own re-election chances. They're perfectly happy with out there leading the charge and taking the hits. You'll notice that no democrats (other than Joe Lieberman) have taken her to task for any of her goofy issue positions. To the extent she is being criticized, it's about style, not substance. That means that deep down inside, they don't disagree with her on substance. They'e perfectly happy with her proposal to spend $40 trillion to buy votes, and pay for it by raising taxes on the evil "rich" and corporations, even though those taxes would raise only $2 trillion (and that is assuming that those "rich" and "corporations" decide to keep their income here and pay every nickel of additional taxes).

Could I vote for a democrat? Yes, one who says that AOC is full of BS. You see one out there?

She is honest about where she wants to take the country. While I strongly disagree, I respect her more than the average democrat like, say, Estrogen Tim Kaine, who pretends to be some reasonable moderate every time there is an election.

I love the democrats who say, "She's just a young freshman congressperson. She doesn't speak for me." I want somebody to ask the obvious follow-up, "OK, so where do you differ with her?"

I actually think that what he did with King in the 60s was pretty brave. He took significant risks.

Unfortunately, people like him often can never leave that time frame even though where this country stands from a Civil Rights perspective is now very different from then......too often he acts like it's still 1965. Some people learned they could make money and garner power playing the race game.

Now, people invent stuff and call it racist. Back then, it was pretty out front in too many places.
