Abraham is a good QB but the turned the ball over a lot this season. A lot of it was his own doing and a lot was also terrible blocking by the o-line. I want to see him w/ a decent line blocking. It's kinda hard to judge him based on the terrible line play we had this past season, although he put up some decent numbers.

Gonna be tough keeping the new Freshman on the sidelines with his abilities, but we'll see what Summer brings.

^agree. Competition breeds success. With the amount of guys we've got returning along w/ them big boys we signed in December and the losses of Dawson, Losey, and Finley...I'm pretty stoked about this coming season. I think we've got a really good chance of winning the west and maybe getting 10+ wins.

I really hope not. Someone needs to beat him out.

Seems we are gravitating to dual-threat quarterbacks (both 2019 signees fit the bill), so not sure if Abraham is odd-man out or just the "last of his kind". Whatley actually showed some promise in 2018, but not sure if he didn't throw it much because they were scared or because he couldn't? 04-cheers

Our OL had many issues in 2018, but an aggressive and elusive Dual-Threat QB can take a lot of pressure off them. We just haven't had a successful one since Davis, who didn't have a lot of carries but could get the yardage when we needed it.

Our OL last year almost converted Abraham into a duel threat QB as much as they had him running for his life...and he just about mastered the 3 step drop aka if he got to the 3rd step he was getting sacked

He is definitely the best we have. Abraham will remain the starter. He also seems to understand the playbook the best. We just need to get a run game to take some pressure off him.

USM loses another football coach. Tight End coach Brock Hayes reported to now be with La Tech. This means USM is looking to hire OL, QB and TE coach along with a DB coach. It appears that whomever Hopson hires/promotes as his OC could have quite a bit of say in the remaining coaches on offense. The only 2 remaining on offense still are RB coach Les Koenning and WR coach Scotty Walden. IMO, Koenning has the experience but I feel like many/most people want Walden as his offense at his previous school put up "video game type" stats. Granted the talent level is a step above his previous job (a D3 school in Texas) but his offenses led all of D3 in scoring and was 2nd in total offense in his few years there.

I'll just leave this right here. Thread was before the first game he ever coached at USM

and couple more for good measure

I'll add, that Nick Mullens (starting NFL QB) regressed his senior year, under Dawson's mentorship / direction (as I feared and predicted).

Scratch that part about Les Koenning....he was hired today by Les Miles to be the OC at Kansas so we are now down to just 1 coach on offense. And irony is our OC goes to Houston as assistant coach (and not OC) while an assistant goes to Kansas to be their OC.

Considering Dawson is not the OC or even co-OC at Houston it would be a little difficult to give him credit for the play calling/scoring

That was also the last time that usm conveniently, was relevant in football.

If by vastly overrated, you mean a team whose head coach didn’t care about the game anymore because he was leaving for aTm, then yes.

What does army have to do with usm being irrelevant in football? If anything the army beatdown was the best thing that happened because we upgraded to an actual coach.

Back on 2015, on paper Shannon Dawson did seem like a really good hire. He's since proven that to be untrue. Thank god he's gone. Houston, don't let him ANYWHERE near you's guy's playcalling.

Doesn’t matter usm’s coach actually wanted to win the game. Sumlin got into a fight wih our qb because keenum called him out for not even showing up to work the weeks leading up to the game.
