Weber State football has announced a three-game football series with Dixie State for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The two teams will meet twice in Ogden and once in St. George in the series.

Dixie State announced last week its plans to move to Division I and will compete as an FCS independent, beginning in 2020.

The first game of the series will be played on Oct. 10, 2020, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden. The Wildcats will return a game in St. George in 2021, and will host the Trailblazers again in Ogden in 2022. Exact dates of those games will be announced later.

A six-game series with NAU has also been announced, per this article:

Dixie State and NAU will open a six-game series (all dates TBA) in Flagstaff in the 2023 season. The Lumberjacks will also host the Trailblazers in 2025 and 2027, while DSU and NAU will square off inside Trailblazer Stadium in 2024, 2026 and 2028.

I inferred that with the term "bus league" when describing the Big West. CSUB will reduce its travel cost making it easier on the athletic budget; especially for the non-revenue sports. Overall attendance should be increased with natural rivalries nearby. My whole argument was directed strictly toward men's basketball (the one true revenue sport). I think being in a conference comprised of solely of California school hurts recruiting and CSUB's national brand. It is hard to differentiate one's self from the rest of the pack when almost all are CSU and UC schools; everything is similar across the board. Recruiting California is now a wash. In the WAC, there is an appeal for prospective California recruits to travel to places like Las Vegas, Washington (Seattle), Illinois (Chicago), Missouri (Kansas City), Utah (Salt Lake metro), Arizona (Phoenix), New Mexico, and Texas on a yearly basis. It also makes those places familiar with CSUB basketball for out of state recruiting.

Yup. Bako will just be another CA public school in a league of CA public schools. The WAC did Bako good, now they can melt back into the crowded room full of other non-descript CA public schools.

No brainer scheduling moves by those BSC schools. I'm hoping the Hornets get in line and get on the wagon to St George as well.

Our AD mentioned he is going to call Dixie State AD and get some football games scheduled with them as well. Again, love the Dixie State addition to the WAC! Need two more western teams and I think the WAC will be set for quite awhile, although I feel pretty good about it right now with the addition of Dixie. I'm also pretty confident about Metro State. It seems every single time a school does a feasibility study it results in a move up. Did Tarleton State actually do a feasibility study yet?

Does playing Dixie State in football when they are in transition mode count as a Division 1 win toward bowl eligibility? If so, they could easily pick up a couple body bag games against Power 5 schools every year (in addition to the Big Sky home and homes).

Then you go outside California for recruits, like all the BW schools are doing. UC Riverside's new coach has Aussie, New Zealand and Texas ties. Their roster this year has more players from out of state than within, and I think all of UC Riverside's 2019 recruits are from outside California.

Cal State Fullerton just landed a transfer who's from the state of Texas. 2/3 of their roster this year is from outside California.

UC Santa Barbara has established a pipeline into the PNW with several players from Washington.

Cal Poly has 10 out of state players.

Its interesting / fun to track. The coach's background also plays a fair part. We've recruited "many" guys out of the South because of Barnes' history there. Joiner is a good case in point. IIRC (but I'm not 100% sure on this...), the story was that Joiner's dad is a barber and used to cut Barnes hair. N. Colorado baseball used to have a pretty big Hawaiian connection due to a coach with background there.

I think that the DSU announcement gives us a pretty good blueprint for future additions.

1. Close geographic schools to join (this is all relative)
2. Somewhat of a rivalry (see UVU-DSU cup competition)
3. Ability to play larger schools (ie revenue games)
4. Flexibility of schedule.

I think that most of the future schools are going to go through a similar process.

I think only #1 from your list applies. The WAC is probably still in "we'll take anyone with pulse wanting to go D1" so long as it somewhat complies with #1.

Hey everyone. New here. Figured it was time to stop lurking in join in.

A lot of WAC schools are new to D1 so are still looking for rivals at this level. Any school nearby will help form a rivalry since the WAC is so spread out and schools mostly isolated from each other.

Uvu is a perfect example that. Their unusual path to D1 means they don't really have any potential rivals from their history, so Dixie works well for a lot of reasons. And from Utah population being centered up north, I'm sure a fair number of DSU students come from closer to Ogden, so an away game road trip could also be a weekend home.

For D2 schools to be interested in the WAC, geography and potential D1 rivalries (and prior D2 rivalries) are the incentive. The rivalries don't necessarily need to be in the conference. In Dixie State's case, their rivalry might be with Southern Utah and in Cal Baptist's case, it could be UC Riverside. And, there are also prior D2 rivalries between GCU, CBU, and Dixie State.

For the WAC to be interested in D2 schools, travel cost/accessibility, and adequate "potential" revenue/budget to compete in the conference are needed. Hurd is not looking for programs too far off the beaten path.

A pair of of Colorado schools and APU should be the next additions. Geographic continuity should be a goal.

RE: Dixie St Joins the WAC in 2020.
I’ve always thought that Univ Colorado - Colorado Springs would be a good school for the WAC. They are different from most d2 schools in that that have an exceptionally strong engineering program (due to connections with Hewlett Packard and local defense industry contractors), were identified by the state regents as “The Growth Campus” of the CU system, have seen strong increases in enrollment (currently about 12,500) and construction of many new buildings in recent years. In other words, they are an ambitious institution. For many schools, going to d1 athletics is part of a strategy to elevate the profile of the university. Going d1 would distinguish them from the other state schools in d2 (Pueblo, Mesa, Adams, Ft. Lewis, etc.).

Do they have the money? Based on visits to Colorado Springs, I’d say they could find some in a metro area of 700,000. They are a non-football school (which fits the WAC). They recently built good fields. Their gym is small (but.. UMKC..?) They have 14 teams (6 men / 8 women), meeting d1 requirements. Their mix of sports fits the WAC. They finished #35 in the Learfield Cup standings last year out of 268 d2 schools (and are currently #12). Colorado Springs might be a crowded marketplace with the Air Force Academy and Colorado College d1 hockey. But the reason schools go d1 is based on elevating the institution not making money on ticket sales. And I think UC-CS could elevate the status of the WAC more than Colo Mesa or Pueblo State. I mean, UCCS is the home of "The National Institute for Science, Space and Security Centers". How cool is that?

I’m not saying today or tomorrow. But it seems UCCS is an ambitious school. And that’s what it takes to move up to d1.
