Is Majerle on the hot seat?
I think he’s had ample time to build this program. They don’t seem to be any better off than they were a few years ago. Do you guys think he will be coaching GCU next year?

Majerle will be given every opportunity and resource to succeed, but I don't think it is without an expiration date. Mr. Colangelo is loyal, but he is also a businessman. Jerry may have great affection for Majerle, but also pulled the trigger on trading him away from the Suns when presented what seemed like a better value (Hod Rod ended up sucking!). I don't know how long the leash it, but it does have an end somewhere.

RE: Is Majerle on the hot seat?
I don't see any reason to think so. He's only had 1 year to play for an NCAA tournament bid and he was one game away. Unless GCU starts regressing in record, Id say he has about 5 more years of staying stagnant before he gets fired. The bigger risk is being hired away from GCU. So far this season, GCU played a brutal OOC schedule vs P6 + Nevada SDSU and they were competitive in it till the very end besides Texas. And in WAC play they've looked like the best team so far (yes, losing on a half court shot to NMSU on the road and dominating SU/UVU still is better than losing to CBU who's looked bad since)

For WAC jobs I'd say:

Cold to the touch:
Majerle
Barnes
Jans
Pope
Hayford
Irvin (because he's new)
Croy

Getting warm:
Lew Hill

Hot:
Kareem Richardson

Burning:
None

Only Kareem Richardson is in danger of being fired after this year, and with the way they've turned it around from the 1-7 start he seems fine

Nice analysis here Vandal. Agree 100%. The thought that Majerle is in danger of losing his job seems a bit ridiculous. While this year's record does not show it (yet!), GCU has continued to improve each year. However, the WAC also continues to improve as well. The conference is now ranked #15 out of 32 conferences and almost any team can beat another team (just ask NMSU). I am confident Coach Majerle will lead the Lopes to a WAC conference championship and an NCAA bid sometime in the next few years.

No. He has never had a losing season, he has scheduled some good programs in the past, he recruits well and he is probably the right guy for the program at this time. If the standard is getting to the NCAA Tournament, he has only had one shot at winning a WAC post-season tournament.

I am not big on firing coaches that are winning, but every school defines winning differently. A twenty win season at Chicago State or UMKC is different than a twenty win season at NMSU. I think Majerle will be at GCU until the Phoenix Suns fire another head coach.

A Suns coach getting fired seems to happen every year lately. :)
