First of all both of those programs win more than they lose.

Belmont is 12-3. They won 24 games last year. They won 22 games the year before (and upset Georgia in the NIT). They won 20 games the year before. They won 22 the year before that and went to the NCAA's. 24 wins the year before that. 26 wins the year before that. 27 wins the year before that. They are consistently good, something that can not be said for most of the teams in our conference.

UTA is not having a good year this year but they won 21 last year, 25 the year before, 23 the year before.

Even if you're not impressed with the options, consider this. What this 16 team format does is create a microcosm of the P5 vs. non P5. The P5 racks up wins by buying home games agains the non-P5. Then when they play each other they look good in any statistical measure because you have winners playing winners. Regardless of who you invite a 16 team, 2 division system does the same thing.

I think any compromise that you have to make in the invites is well worth resolving the two concerns I mentioned previously.

That's in very poor taste. The guy is fighting cancer.

Got it, though it was still in poor taste to make fun of someone's physical appearance that is experiencing life threatening health issues. Hopefully you weren't aware of that prior to your comment.

Well under this scenario if they aren't any good then they'll be in the lower division and you won't have to play them unless you already have no shot at an at large anyway.

So? What is the difference between those two teams attendance and 5 or 6 schools in our conference now?

They are basketball only.

Why in the hell would we bring in a mediocre basketball program "just because."

Any basketball only additions need to be bringing consistent At Large bids and improve our conference. Neither of them do this.

Yeah, lets add members who don't even average half of what our top teams in the conference average.

Unless you just don't want to share a conference with a Classic commuter school AT ALL. And yes, I'm aware that some members of this conference already walk awfully close to that "commuter school" line anyway.

No... not "just because". BECAUSE of the reasons I laid out in detail. We get real value from going to this format.

(01-15-2019 09:07 AM)herdfan129 Wrote:  Any basketball only additions need to be bringing consistent At Large bids and improve our conference. Neither of them do this.

Yeah actually, I think they would. Not because I expect the additions to be Duke, but because the 16 team format that I laid out better shields the top teams from cellar dwellers and gets top teams more home and home games against each other.

Under what I laid out Marshall would not even play UTA unless both Marhsall and UTA were in the same 8 team division. If UTA makes the top 8 that means they beat out at least 5 current CUSA members to get there. That means you would be playing a "better" schedule than you currently are. And if Marshall doesn't make the top 8... then you have no chance of an at large anyway so who cares?

Under the current system you play every team in the conference... even the ones that are down this year. Under my system that is no longer true... you could have at most 4 of your 18 regular season conference games against the bottom half of the conference. And instead of playing @ Old Dominion and @ North Texas with no return games you would get return games against both. So tell me again... how does UTA hurt you in the system I laid out?

My heart is not set on UTA or any school in particular. It is the format that I am selling here not any particular addition. I suggested those because they are geographically compatible. Go after a horizon school or a Missouri Valley school for all I care.

I don't care who we play. It's about money. No way in hell does it make sense to add 2 more basketball only schools unless they are bringing a 2nd bid every year. Otherwise, we are just taking the same money and splitting it 16 ways as opposed to 14.

The only teams who would be worth bringing in will not come so this discussion is mute.

Teams like that would be the only ones worth considering.

Butler, VCU, George Mason, Dayton, St Louis, etc.

None of those teams are coming. If they would then I would say heck yeah. But to bring in Belmont and UT-Arlington just so we can get to 16 would be silly.

The last few years the top teams have been ranked in the 30's. The gap between our top teams and an at large is not huge. It's small. We don't need a leap, we need a nudge. Completely shielding the top teams from the bottom teams could be that nudge. So AGAIN it is not just about getting to 16. It is about MULTIBIDS. It is about exactly what you say it is about.

If we get ONE extra bid each year with 16 then we make more money than we do with one bid and 14 teams. Period.

And if we get the same amount of bids with 2 more teams then we all get less money lol.

Belmont and UT-Arlington are not going to bring an extra bid.

As much as my fellow Miner fans won't like this suggestion, one team to add as the 15th, all sports, would be NMSU. They regularly win the WAC in mbb, have good baseball and are close to UTEP to ease travel. That would make it more reasonable for any team flying into El Paso (other than FB) to get two games for one trip. Not sure who else to add to make 16 worthwhile.
