To end the season our top teams are going to get more opportunities for Quadrant 1 and 2 wins which is huge.
I like the idea of the pods but I don't like it in our current form.
I have two problems with the set up as it currently is.
#1 it doesn't maintain geographic rivalries. MTSU is our best geographic rival and we no longer get a home and home with them (unless we're in the same pod).
#2 Depending on which teams you get at home or on the road the scheduling can be VERY unfair.
Home court advantage is HUGE in college basketball. There is a REASON that P5 teams don't play us at our place. That reason is that they know there is a MUCH better chance that they will lose. So without a home and home situation I don't think it is an equitable method to name a regular season champion. Another way to look at it is this... if all I want is road games then I don't need a conference. WKU can get road games against P5 teams no problem. The whole point of being in a conference is that you get home games back.
My proposed fix would be this... add two non-football playing schools for 16 total teams and break it down even further.
You would have four geographic pods and you would play everybody in that pod home and home. That would allow for close geographic rivalries and alleviate concern #1. Then you would break into two 8-team divisions based on some measure (my preference would be NET standing). The top 2 teams from each geographic pod would go to the higher division and the bottom 2 teams from each geographic pod would go to the lower division. You would then play home and home against every team in your division (except the one that you already played home and home in your pod). That gives you a total of 18 conference games.
I would do a 12 team conference tournament with all 8 teams from the top division going and the top 4 teams from the bottom division.
This format preserves geographic rivalries and protects the top teams from playing from playing too many games against the bottom while ensuring that everybody gets a fair shot at the championship.
