2019 FB Off-Season Thread
A thread for general discussion about off-season topics related to the football program. Spring game, Fall camp, etc.

First, some OL Depth lost.

Greg Madia
@Madia_DNRSports

Missed this last week while away for Christmas, but JMU offensive lineman Mike Faulkner has transferred to Division II West Alabama. Faulkner played in nine games over the last two seasons for the Dukes.

Good News: Jimmy Moreland will be in the East/West Shrine Game.

Corico Wright
@CoachWrightC

@iv_jimmy CONGRATS On The East-West Shrine selection. @Shrine_Game ?

Wish the kid well and thanks for your contributions. It does open the door for a beast P5 transfer, though our last two O-line guys from big schools fizzled.

While JMU could land a P5 OL transfer, this kid’s leaving I don’t think makes a difference in that. After Fishpaw had his injury, Faulker was listed in the game notes as 3rd at RT behind one of the true Fr (Moran and Kidwell). Wasn’t Faulker a former walkon? Was he on scholly?

All 12 that were listed at least 3 games on the 2 deep, including the 6 who started at least 1/2 the games last season, are slated to return. Did lose during the season Butler, but he didn’t play before be left the team mid season.

Right now the roster shows 19 OL, including Dec signee Tanner Morris. I imagine JMU might sign 1 more OL, + have several walkons. Probably lose a couple more between now and Aug, likely will have 20+ OL start of summer camp, more than usual. Copied off of ‘2019 Early Depth Chart thread’, removing Faulkner, adding Morris & updating to 2019 class year:

OL (19)
-#60 rSr Jahee Jackson (6’3”/295) (returning starter, 2017 2nd team All CAA).
-#68 rSr Tyree Chavious (6’4”/318) (returning starter)
-#73 Sr Mac Patrick (6’2”/284) (returning starter, 2018 3rd team All CAA).
-#79 rJr Raymond Gillespie (6’5”/272) (returning starter).
-#67 rJr Zaire Bethea (6’3”/309) (returning starter).

Would like to see a trend where the future line recruits "grow" from 6'2"-6'3" to 6'4"-6'5". We have our share of short squatties.

There are some "short squatties" (to use your term)...but have you looked closely at the roster? I count 6 OL players 6'5" or taller, and 5 at 6'4"...there's some real beef up front!

Damn! That freshman class is massive! Add sophomore Reece, and we field a wall of meat in a couple of years. The future looks good.

Yeah, I was only going off the 2 deep from most of last season- not the entire roster (I think it's currently 6 guys). The whole list does show good size. Hopefully, the majority were scholarship worthy. I know Moran, Kidwell and Schroeder were scholarship recruits from the class of 2018.

There is a lot of beef on the menu, but are there 5 pieces of PRIME?

For all that size we sure didn't seem to be able to keep a pocket or run block very well. Hoping, no, I'm confident the new coaching regime can put that size to work.

Madia's latest article mentioned that there is only one assistant spot still left to fill. Anyone know which one that is? I don't have the time to look it up myself. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response!

EDIT: And now it looks like we have that DL Coach. Madia reporting that JMU and HC3 is adding Andrew Jackson, Mississippi State defensive QC coach and 7th president of the US, as the final member of the coaching staff. Welcome to the school of the 4th prez, Coach Jackson!

FRISCO 2020
So, which hotel are we going to make as JMU Fan Headquarters next January in Frisco? We need to make the reservations now.

Thanks for the reminder!

Actually an excellent thought, as reservations are FREE and easy to cancel, and become expensive closer to the date. You can typically book rooms for next year right after the game.

Omni Frisco is the team hotel for the #1 seed (top bracket). If you have less faith, Westin Stonebriar is the hotel for the #2 seed (bottom bracket)

04-cheers

If the OL coach is good, we need to pay him. That position has been a revolving door the past few years and needs to locked down. Especially when the guys on the line are young, having to learn a new coach (and potentially new technique) every year make sit tough.

The new OL coach's bio:

Looks like he was a part of good rushing teams at both Rutgers and Delaware prior to Elon.

I like that hire, he's a great leader. Just look at what he did at the battle of New Orleans.

Potus #7 had the nickname "Old Hickory" for his toughness. Hoping our Andrew Jackson's D-line lives up to that moniker.

Does this make our upcoming game against the Tribe the "Trail of Tears Bowl"? (too soon?)
