Bowl Blowout Central
I don't really watch bowl games (except UC), but I can't remember the last time seeing a competetive bowl game. Is there a reason so many of these games end up so lopsided? Lack of effort by one of the teams? Lack of passion? This sport's post season is so dumb and pointless, I really can't blame the players the coaches. You would think college football big wigs would see the spectacle that March Madness is, and want to cash in on some of that. Surely there is money to be made?

The bottom will fall out, at some point, with these bowl games. As of now, they claim that they are super profitable.

NFL hopefuls sitting out was probably the start of the downfall.

Although ratings have declined for many bowl games, they are still strong relative to many other sporting events. When a terribly played Wednesday Cheez its bowl between 2 .500 teams gets the same # of viewers as a Saturday evening bball game between UNC/UK (two of the bluest bloods in the sport), the bowls will continue on. People still prefer to watch bad football over most other sports in this country.

It will be interesting to see how the players sitting out continues to affect the ratings in the future. I do see that as a major threat as the # of players who sit out will only increase I would guess.

Football is the perfect background tv show. The action is slow enough that you can do other things and still not miss most of the action. ESPN will continue to get enough ratings and advertisers will continue to purchase time for commercials.

I expect their to more a few more bowls added in the next 5 years.

Agree. Football is very profitable for the networks. Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of idle holiday time.

However, it is not necessarily profitable for the schools.

Alabama currently getting their teeth kicked in by Clemson, 44 - 16 in the 4th quarter.

I have no interest in watching this trash, but I saw the score on Twitter and thought it was hilarious.

Hilarious I didnt watch either as I was sleeping, but I jist saw preseason top 25 for next year and guess who is #1 and #2?!?! The suspense is probably killing you... or even the top 5? They litterally take the aame 5 or 6 teams every year, shuffle them around and then throw Alabama vs Clemson at us.

Different circumstances, but I beloeve alot of the reason boxing declined in interest was when the promoters began hoarding all of the money to a few select fighters. It's not sustainable and I hope ot blows up in their face.

Even the bad bowls between a SBC v MAC school does well compared to other shows on at the same time slot. I read an article indicating there is actually consideration to add a couple more bowls.

Intuitively, the TV ratings make sense. Networks feast on reruns during the second half of December. School is out, businesses close for days at a time and many of us stack vacation days around Christmas and New Year's holidays.

I won't be surprised if bowls are added. Perhaps ESPN creates another option for us to sweeten the AAC TV deal?

ESPN owns most of these bowl games, and it gives them content to fill their channel during the holidays, which is a dead time in the broadcast schedule. The games get decent ratings, and I assume many people are like me, and they would rather watch a Bowl Game in hopes it will be good rather than the same tired holiday movies like Vacation for the 150th time.

Alabama got stomped because they were disinterested. They didn't get an invite to the Superbowl this year, so this was just a bowlcation for them.

But is there a true downside to watching Vacation 150th time? Fix the newel post!

Does Clemson - Alabama belong on the bowl blowout thread?

Though I must admit, I enjoyed seeing anyone beat Alabama by a bunch. I was getting tired of hearing about them.

Apparently the #1 seed has never won since this sh!tshow playoff started. I guess the idiots picking the teams aren't nearly as smart as they think they are. Who would have figured that ND's defense was better than Alabama's?
