Realistic stats goals for the rest of the hoops season
All good teams hit good measurable statistics goals. You can look at the final score BUT that score is simply the addition/subtraction of attaining good statistics.

What stat goals are most important to this or any team? Here's my thought: limiting TO to under 12, defense shot % below 45% (minimum), 3 pt% below (33%) minimum, 6 steals minimum (deflection >30 per game (minimum) and to at least stay even or better on the glass.

If a team can do these things, they will have success provided that they have any offense at all. And, UNCW does have guys that can score although they go into dry spells due to poor ball/player movement that doesn't have a low/mid post touch and/or a kick back out.

I hope that that coaching staff reads this because I feel that they can get it done eventually because they're getting good players coming in.

These stats would be great, but they don't happen by accident. There has to be a plan or strategy to meet them.

Honestly, now that i've read this, here is what I would LOVE to see. How about McGrath laying out to the media what stats he's looking for after games instead of you? Yeah, i'll say his name. Keatts would sit in interviews and tell the world what his expectations were. He'd lay out how many defelections he expected and what we actually accomplished. We knew how many steals and TO's he wanted. He'd clearly tell us the 3 point percentage he wanted UNCW to hold the other team to and whether we met that goal. He clearly stated that his focus was on defense, and that he gave the players freedom on offense. Although WE cared, I never heard him declare a goal for limiting our TO's, limiting our fouls, or shooting a certain percentage on offense. In his strategic plan, those stats weren't what he measured as a key to success.

In other words, everyone KNEW what Keatts goals were and how he expected the team to perform in order to win. He measured the games in stats just like Bill has. I still have no idea what McGrath has laid down as goals to win a game and what he's looking for stat wise to determine if the team is meeting his goals. It cannot simply be "score more than the other team". Yes, that's the utimate goal, but we all know that a larger goal is nothing more than a compilation of smaller goals. In his mind, do we need to shoot 51% in order to win? Do we need to keep our TO's to 10 or under? Do we need to dominate the offensive boards? Do we need to cause 13+ TO's? That's specific. That's something the players, coaches and fans can understand clearly. This nonsense about "they hit some lucky shots" or "We just need to play harder" is useless to everyone. Be specific. Set Goals. Then, have a plan to meet those goals.

My greatest concern with McGrath is that he has NEVER been in charge. He's never had to lead a team of players or a group of coaches to meet goals. He's never had to motivate, lead, set goals, make decisions and take ultimate responsibility for success or failure of a group in his life. Ever. Not in business and not as a coach.

I realize that I am ultimately looking for leadership from McGrath, and i'm just not seeing it. Even if he knows x's and 0's, leading a team to success requires far more than that. There are a lot of people who know their craft, but can't lead others to success. There are lots of talented basketball players who could never be coaches, and there are lots of mediocre basketball players who became great coaches.

In the future, we're better off hiring a head coach who has experienced success at a lower level than a coach who has never been a head coach at all. We tend to forget that Keatts spent far more time as the head coach at Hargrave than he did as the assistant at Louisville. NCSU took Keatts for that exact reason. He had success at Hargrave and then success in the CAA.

McGrath may come around, but my greatest concern is that i'm just not seeing the leadership qualities that are needed to be successful.
