MBB - Game 13 - JMU
Read this about JMU on the CAA website:
"The Dukes top the CAA with 8.3 steals per game. Their 100 total steals are 22 more than any other conference team."
That is not auspicious for our young ballhandlers.

That's a deceiving stat. Eye test does not support them giving our ballhandlers any trouble. Despite their talent, JMU is struggling to find themselves. Fordham totally dominating them tonight. Almost wonder if Rowe has lost this team some.

JMU has four players averaging over 1 steal. The RPI and Sagarin agree that they have a weak SOS.

The initial two CAA games are critical...we have to win them both to restore confidence with this team.
There is no doubt we miss the remarkable speed and scoring of Cohn at point guard and the best shooter in college basketball last year, Burchfield. They are gone and this is a different team.
Pierce and Milon have been erratic...i know of no current injury liabilities either player are working under right now and Tony said as much at the last Anna's luncheon.
I still believe we'll put it together and look forward to opening a new season on Friday.

It would be nice to win these first two CAA games, but there aren't any critical games until March. Pierce has not been healthy since a couple of games into the season, and I hope Milon is playing through an injury. Otherwise he's significantly worse across the board for no reason. I have no doubt both players would have told you they were ready to go going into the UVA game. That's why coaches need to be the adults in the room. Justin hasn't been able to execute his signature drive all season. Matt hasn't been able to hit anything since he was out earlier in the season. There is no better time than now (well, two weeks ago, but it's too late for that) to rest them and let the freshmen loose.

I was about to blow a gasket here but then realized TITB is most likely saying that all that counts is the CAA tournament. In that, he is correct. However, if you think that preparing for the tournament by getting the best seed that you can is important, then Bubbadog is also correct. JMU and Towson, at home, should both be winnable games this year. We have problems but I don't think that we stink. It appears that Towson stinks, and JMU is inconsistent at best. So we need to win these winnable games, we absolutely can not afford to give away any good win opportunities. So, in that regard, I agree that these first two games are critical for our chances to get a top four seed in March.

I am sure Tony said that the Pierce and Milon are cleared to play but that is different than being at 100%. Milon and Pierce have both not played due to injury in the past month and it is obvious that they are off. Only the player knows how much this is due to injury, not enough practice together as a team, chemistry of team versus lack of focus and having an off day.

It's fun to say that only the tournament matters, but in the last 20 years the lowest seed to win the CAA tourney was a 4 seed, and that happened once (2000). Since the CAA tourney started in 1980 there's been one time a seven seed won it (1993), two 4 seeds (1993 and 2000)...and that's it outside of the top 3. The CAA's always been top-heavy.

RE: MBB - Game 13 - JMU
Apparently the Tribe is last in the league in 3 pt shooting percentage. Cannot believe that. But, it has been historically bad the last 3 games. I don't expect Nathan to have any room to operate if that continues. Plenty of blame on the bad shooting to go around. At UVA, I know they played poorly, but many of the looks were open and uncontested so they were getting decent chances. Either the shooting has to improve, or a change to the offense might be coming. Defensively things were better until the game got away late (in part thanks to Nathan patrolling the paint without foul trouble for much of the game).
Any update on Pierce for tomorrow's game?

RE: MBB - Game 13 - JMU
Lots of JMU postings on the UVA game thread, but I think that the schedule sets up for a possible turnaround. If the Tribe can win games at Kaplan over the next couple of weeks, it would be near the top of the standings. Given our struggles on the road, it is vital since to end the regular season, we face 5 of the final 7 games on the road. Last season offered a similar chance for a good start and the Tribe took advantage before fading in late January and early February. 5 home games plus a road trip to Drexel and Delaware has potential for a good start. Let's hope the guys can play hard defense and make some 3's and free throws.

RE: MBB - Game 13 - JMU
For the last four months, posters on this board have "spanned the globe" of emotions regarding the difficult OOC schedule. I think most would agree that a .500 start would have been tremendously successful, but that the primary objective was to allow the team to develop some chemistry and the coaching staff to figure out how the newcomers could best contribute. I trust that Coach Shaver, while sometimes expressing incredible frustration over the first month of the season (perhaps because he sees great potential in this team), has prepared them for the season that begins this afternoon. As TP91 noted above, we need a fast start over the first seven games. Building confidence is key, and it needs to start today.
LET'S GO TRIBE!

Winning Pct: .479

Last meeting: 1/11/18
Under Shaver:
Regular Season Games: 30
Record: 19-11
Home: 12-3
Away: 7-8
Tourney: 1-1
Since 2013, we are 8-2 overall.
That makes some sense. Tony Shaver started in 03-04.
From 77-78 (when we first played) until 02-03 (the year before Shaver), the Dukes' record was 424 - 318 (.5714).
From 03-04 until last year (last time the teams met), the Dukes' record was 197 - 278 (.4147). That's a drop of 15.67%.
At the same time, W&M's record from 77-78 until 02-03 was 296 - 423 (.4117). Since 03-04, W&M's record is 212-251 (.4579), a difference of 4.62%
So it makes sense in the first 66 games they were 39-27 (.5909) while they've gone 11-19 since then (.3667). This drop of roughly 22% makes sense given their 15-16% fall off and our roughly 5% improvement.
Obviously, not every series will perfectly track the cycles of programs, but given the fairly overlapped competition of the two teams and the pretty consistent data, it's interesting to see how the series record reflects the status of the two teams overall throughout the years.
From the other thread on recent trends, etc., against the Dukes.

Still 4+ hours to tip off and I already have that nervous anxiety feeling about a game that I have not had all year. These two games this weekend are so important. When you open on the road you almost feel like you are playing with house money and a win goes into your back pocket almost like a get out of jail card for a future screwup. Not so when you open at home. Got to hold serve this weekend.

Just settle down and enjoy. We need to stop this continuous "must win" mentality. If I've learned anything from years of college basketball, no one game makes the season. Win or lose, we have another game on Sunday.
