I'm Bringing 24 Back
No, not the TV show even though that would be cool. I don't have that kind of pull.

What I mean is that maybe we should revisit the notion of a 24 team league assuming the Alston case does not go the way of the NCAA.

I think 24 is a solid number for a lot of different reasons, but what could be a realistic path to that sort of structure if amateurism essentially disappears?

1. One poster made a lot of sense when he said that pride would probably drive the SEC to maintain independence from any national league. After thinking that over, I would have to agree.

With that in mind, I think we would see the SEC try to gravitate some of the powers towards itself for the purpose of value and stability, but I no longer think SEC schools would be up for joining one national organization where they could easily be outvoted on key matters.

2. I think growing the league to about 24 would be very beneficial in light of the need to compete with any other entity that might form.

There would likely be a counterweight centered around Big Ten schools and maybe some PAC 12 schools. This sort of duopoly could be a natural result of the economics. One power is unlikely to form. Three is possible, but I don't think likely given the lack of suitable options. Two seems to be more likely and so we could have a college athletics Cold War, so to speak. A college football version of the rivalry between the USA and the USSR...

3. The important aspect of 24 is that it gives you room to maintain your own region while stretching out into others to form a strong coalition. That will be important to get the best media deal...a combo of markets and quality content.

4. It's also big enough to attract pretty much everyone we could want along with any political tag-alongs so that any new members are happy.

5. it would also be easy to set up an internal playoff because there will be so many teams that a standard rotation would not be best for scheduling purposes.

With all that in mind, I think it would behoove the SEC to think aggressively.

A massive realignment?

I think we should offer Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas from the West.

Then we should look at the ACC....

Florida State, Clemson, UNC, Duke, NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

That's a very solid 24 that dominates multiple regions.

No divisions is also a strong possibility

I think the Big 10 might have something to say regarding the SEC just taking all those properties.

Adding those 10 would be a dream come true, AllTideUp. I also have the feeling it is too good to be true. At minimum, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and Miami would have to be given a political and compensatory equivalent in order for the powers at be to sign off on it. I could certainly see a two conference scenario, though, with these Southern schools as one conference and the Big 10/Pac 12/ACC and Big 12 northern teams forming the other conference in the neighborhood of 30 to 32 schools each.
