Also, According to Berkman, He expects Cade Edwards to be one of the top hitters on the team and conference and thinks he and Cruz will be the best middle infielders in the conference
Good to hear, I remember everyone was saying Edwards was great last spring. Hope we whoop TCU for not letting him play.
He was our best hitter the Fall of 2017, but hasn't swung a bat in over 9 months. He'll certainly be a humongous upgrade defensively at 2B (vs. Gneitting), but it may take him awhile (ditto DiCap) to shake off the rust at the plate.

Looking forward to 2019 season. When will spring practice start? Haven’t seen anything yet.

I'm guessing the last week in January. The NCAA allows 3 weeks of full team practices prior to opening day (February 15th). Of course, bullpen have already started, as has batting practice and limited infield/OF work.

Very surprised Texas made the Top 25 after losing their stud SS (Hamilton) for the season last week (torn achilles). Not sure where their offense is going to come from. We have far more returning offense than the Horns do.

RE: 2019 Rice Baseball Way Too Early Preview & Thought Starter
From D1Baseball's Top 25 preseason chat earlier this afternoon...
https://d1baseball.com/chats/2019top-25-...n-edition/
Quote:Wayne Graham : Where do you see my owls finishing this year in CUSA with the likes of Canterino, Moss, DiCaprio (Best Catcher in Rice History), Comeaux……as well as some talented freshmen arms. They’ll surprise a lot of people. I’ve taught them well Kendall;-)
Kendall Rogers: First of all, I can almost guarantee you Coach Graham isn’t sitting on a preseason baseball chat. With that said, I’m intrigued to see how Rice does this season. I love the one-two punch on the weekend in Matt Canterino and Addison Moss. Moss looked very sharp for me against A&M this past fall, sitting in the low 90s with a good slider. We all know what kind of stuff Matt has, too. I think their success on the bump ultimately boils down to Roel Garcia and Garrett Gayle. Both have premier arms … but Garcia needs to stay healthy and Gayle needs to throw strikes. The pitching will need to be good, because the offense could struggle at times. Keep an eye on Dom Cox and Justin Collins. I absolutely LOVED Collins this past fall and the staff thinks Cox will surprise some people.
I exchanged several tweets with Kendall earlier this morning. First off, while I agree that our offense is our biggest question mark (along with OF defense), I think he's grossly underestimating our returning corp, especially with the return of a healthy DiCaprio and the inclusion of Cade Edwards. Comeaux, Collins, Cruz, Dunlap, DiCap and Edwards if far more offense than UT and some other Top 25 teams have returning. As for our pitching, I view Garcia and Gayle more as wild cards, but think the key will be the contribution from our four seniors (Jefferies, Parthasarathy, Esquivel, Kravetz), the middle two of whom are healthy for the first time in at least 2 years, as well as the two newcomers (Greenwood, Deskins).

Of course, DiCap missed virtually the entire season, Dunlap missed almost half the season, and Cade Edwards wasn't eligible. Kody Clemens was UT's offense last year, with Hamilton's .291 AVG second on the team (not to mention 31 - 36 in stolen bases), while anchoring the infield defense.

Dom and Andrew ARE returning. The comparison above would look just a wee bit different if you put in their combined 2017 numbers. (Note- when Andrew finally returned last year, it took him 3+ weeks to shake off the rust and return to his 2017 form.)

A quick count says 18 including those who also pitch and Dunlap who is listed only as DH.

Got it. Hopefully the majority of those pitchers/position players are quality position players? Otherwise we seem quite heavy on the pitchers and light on the position players.

Moss, Jefferies and Larzabal are the two-way players, listed as P/IFs. So 15 pure position players including Dunlap at DH.

That's a bit misleading though since one of those is a brand new senior walk-on (Brandon Russell) who apparently is going to be the bullpen catcher. And a couple of others are upperclass guys (Brewer, Duluc) who really haven't played much at all in their previous seasons (like 13 total at-bats between the two of them). It's mostly brand-new guys and maybe 6 or 7 guys with decent Rice experience (Trei Cruz, Dicaprio, Comeaux, Justin Collins, Cox, Frazier, Kneiting and Dunlap).
I'm curious if Tyner has ever batted much in the past. He certainly has the size to be a DH/1B.

So basically about twelve position players. I hope we stay healthy.
