I think that's very possible. USF was not what they were early in the season. And UCLA was better later in the season than they were at the beginning. I'd take Ohio over Tulane. They have to be kicking themselves for their loss to Miami. Cost them the MAC (they blew out Buffalo the following week).

That Miami game was really weird...definitely one they'd love to have back.

Really, if OU could close, they'd be at 12-2 this season (including the MAC CG)

Lead UC by 2 points with 7:44 left in the 4th (and had an opportunity to score at the GL)
Lead NIU by 4 points with 4:51 left in the 4th

The Virginia loss was a blowout, and the Miami game was one where they had to come back from an early fart noise and gave up a safety in the 4th quarter which ultimately was the difference.

Nathan Rourke is a pretty damn good hybrid QB.

I felt that Ohio was about a couple plays away from 11 wins. That comeback at Nippert is one of all time great UC wins. That was a really good Ohio team with a scary offense.

Solich's success shows there's another path to winning for MAC programs besides hiring the next hot thing for 2-3 years before he moves on or fails. Of course the trick is finding the right guy who isn't likely to be a candidate to jump anywhere even after a few successful seasons. I think UC was basically trying to do the same thing (with a coach who had even more success earlier in his career than Solich) in Tubs. Tubs also brought a sense of national credibility to UC by leaving a P5 job to take our G5 job at a time where it seemed like it would be a great boost. I'm pretty sure that's still the only time it ever happened and I think chances are good it might never happen again.

In hindsight, I think the biggest difference between the two in a nutshell was Solich thought he still had something to prove after getting canned at Nebraska while Tubs felt that having proven himself previously at the highest level in college football that things would come easier at the G5 level.

Solich is a good, not great coach. He is solid enough to be in 8-10 games a year, but his scheme and play calling is such that his teams have the occasional WTF loss and fail to beat a team with better talent and coaching, thus resulting in 2-4 losses in a season.
Sort of like a Dave Wannesdadt or Greg Schiano like

At age 74, he must be the oldest active head coach in FBS football. I wonder if Ohio has a succession plan in mind with one of his assistants? If not, it's hard to imagine that Ohio's success is sustainable once he retires.

Couldn't agree more. Solich got a raw friggin deal from Nebraska, a place he poured his heart and soul into for nearly 4 decades as a player and coach...to me, he has been fighting to prove them wrong ever since.

His results and Nebraska's lack of results proves Frank got a raw deal.

Unlike TT, Solich is high motor.

Tonight AAC USF v CUSA Marshall

Strong v Doc Holliday

USF has lost 5 in a row after 7-0 start including a big win over GT. Once TX stops paying most of Strong's salary why would USF keep him. He was a winner at UL only because of Teddy Bridgewater. He did nothing at TX despite all the money and facilities.

I hope USF protects our AAC record but Strong is a weak coach.

USF appears ready to find a new way to embarrass the American, though they did just find a way to score. If they ever claim that a major conference wants them, I will really laugh.

You mean like how Granpappy Grubbs embarrassed the American? We didn't exactly perform up to par under his guidance. The shellacking we took from SDSU in the Hawaii Bowl was one of the worst ever not to mention some of the regular season gaffes.

The best part about that game is that it was on Christmas Eve and I was too busy doing family stuff to care. It was background noise that year.

I remember this Board lit up like a Christmas Tree in Gas Town after that beatin' behind the woodshed. I think there were 10 threads calling for Grubbs' head. Cannon fire GIFs galore. I participated freely and willingly and sadistically...

Marshall to win as I predicted.

USF trails 38-20 with four to go.

Glad USF has Strong as he is over rated.

Actually this about sums it up for Strong’s legacy as a coach. Those Louisville teams had several players, including Bridgewater, who flipped from the U to Louisville after Strong was hired. The players came with assistant Clint Hurtt. Hurtt got canned several years later after his role in the Neville Shapiro issue came up, and Strong has not been able to recruit the same ever since.

Starting January 1st Texas is no longer paying Strong. Have to wonder if next year is it for him at USF. UC, UCF and Temple will likely finish in the top 3 of the east, so there’s a good chance their record will not be any better next season.

The 2019 September schedule for the 'Cats may be a rocky road; Marshall looked good last night and they're pretty tough at home.

All the more reason to go get win #11 in two weeks and celebrate an amazing 2018 season just a little longer.
