2021 Football Recruiting
My gut says we are done. Money is tight and there is uncertainty in who decides to stick around the extra season and what scholarships will be available. I think we, along with a lot of schools, will be trying to hit the PWO market pretty aggressively.

If we have a limit on the number of players we may not have much room-bummer.

QB Darius Wilson 6'3 185 New Rochelle, NY

I'll take the guy we got COGS

Same. And the kid seems to have great leadership qualities to boot.

I agree - we have a small but very talented class. I do think we'll offer PWO but, should we have space this summer, I believe we'll see some FBS transfers round out the class.

Guys like Hefter & Crist probably want to get started with their professional lives. Interesting thing about Crist, he is a potential UFA if he wants that opportunity. Not sure if another year will help his stock or not. My advice, if he wants to give pro ball a shot, is to learn how to LS.

More offers off our list. Of the rest, most who pinned our offer have removed them.

OK this is probably biased but I just watched Hudl and I think Wilson can run better than Edwards 05-stirthepot

They both have great arms.

I didn't compare Wilson & Edwards. If anything, I wanted to point out that the guy we really wanted decomitted and would've done the same to us. Wilson is our guy and has shown he's 100% Tribe. I'm glad he's on our side.

This here. I want to recruit guys that are excited and want to be here. Wilson (and Mathis before him) seems to be eager ambassadors for the W&M program.
Edwards didn't want to be here before when he had the opportunity and it turns out he didn't want to be at the place he chose either.
I respect that he is a 17 year old & should do what he feels is best, but a failure to stand by one's decisions is a poor reflection on character.

While I agree with most of your post, I’d give the kid a Character pass for 2020. Many kids committed without seeing campus, meeting coaches in person, etc. Hard to be 100% committed to something this way.

If he didn't visit ODU, he definitely didn't visit WF. It comes down to what he considers a better offer.

I agree with your point about the uncertainty of who you are committing to. He did have as much opportunity to see campus/coaches at Wake as he did at ODU. I agree that there was added pressure to commit early with the uncertainty ahead in the fall. He certainly must have felt some uncertainty about ODU. Most kids that are sincerely committed aren't open to being courted by other schools. If you are uncertain about a school, then why commit? I guess I'm just old fashioned in that regard.

I would agree with this stance more if schools weren't allowed to pull offers. Obviously once a kid has signed on the dotted line they're committed, but schools can pull scholarship offers from players who have verbally committed.

Kids wanted to lock into a spot to make sure they had somewhere to go. I remember reading back in May that there were more kids committed at that time this year than the last 2 years combined. I think there will be tons of freshman in the transfer portal in 2022.

At first I thought our staff was losing the recruiting war but now that I think of it we could be ahead of the game. Small solid class and save money to play another day. We will be able to hit the FBS bounce backs and FCS transfer market in a year and we can supplement with PWOs for now.

Agreed! That’s why I think it’s funny he wrote 100% committed to WF. That’s all relative to a bigger offer coming in. But like you guys have said before the Wilson kid is on our side and I don’t mind that at all. He had a ton of offers and can throw and run. I think he will help us a lot at the QB spot.

I think Wilson is a perfect understudy for Mathis. Both are leaders with good arms that can run a little bit. If Mathis goes down for whatever reason, I envision a fairly seamless transition in play calling.

One more thing from me on this. Let's say you planned to graduate college with a degree in pediatric nursing, and during your fall semester, you agreed to work for a general hospital in Spotsylvania. That spring semester, Children's Hospital in DC offers you a position in their pediatric wing.

I'm just an old guy with loose morals, I guess, but I'd take the job in DC 10/10. I don't see what Billy chose as a character flaw...I think he views this as his big shot to play in the ACC.

I didn't like it when the kid decomitted from W&M MBB to play at Hofstra but I can't say it was a poor decision and it has clearly worked out in his favor. The QB from Texas decomitted from our football program and he has bounced around all over the country...don't think he played a down. Probably a bad decision but I don't question his character.

100%. Look out for #1

One of my friends was actually more or less in that situation, he originally took a job out of Wisconsin while in college, but later reject that offer and switched to a federal contractor in DC. The Wisconsin company had some layoffs throughout covid (good shot my friend would've been one of them), whereas the DC business is as good as ever.
