Tarleton is not going FBS. They are moving to WAC and will be Division 1 in all sports.

The WAC does not currently sponsor football so they will play as an FCS independent until that situation can be resolved. Over the next few years I expect TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor and A&M to schedule their team for cupcake week.

Tarleton and UTA both started on similar paths (ag and military training for the North Texas region). Arlington moved to the UTexas System and became an urban research institution focusing on Nursing, engineering and business while Tarleton (under A&M) focused agriculture and education.

Tarleton is the largest non land grant ag college in the country with multiple national championship in collegiate rodeo. This tidbit is not meant to wow anyone only to demonstrate that they Tarleton and UTA cater to different types of students.

In the long-run UTA joining the UT system has been a home run in student recruitment and academic standing.

UALR hasn't fared as well in the UA system. For years it was "hey we kept you from closing, what more do you want?". They finally found a groove and unfortunately Chancellor Anderson was convinced to change the focus and it's been a struggle since.

UALR had a golden niche there for a time. It was the place people went to for degree completion. They certainly had freshmen but a lot of the student body was people who had some college credit from someplace else who came to UALR later on or they were Central Arkansas people who for some reason needed to come back home. Then you had a lot of people needing to get a certification or associates or bachelors to advance at work (knew handful of cops who went there either to get a certification, associates or bachelors). Plus a robust set of post-grad degrees aimed at the workforce.

The leadership was flat-footed as the online programs took off and night programs like Phoenix took off and didn't cash in on having a recognized local name for the diploma and significantly lower prices and instead focused on recruiting freshmen and building on-campus housing.

That's interesting about UALR. Last summer I was driving through Little Rock and took about an hour to walk through the campus of a fellow Sunbelt member. UALR has a very, very pretty campus. Lots of interesting topography and located in beautiful woods. The large, north-south, rectangular quad is gorgeous. Several new buildings, public art.

However, the details of the landscape in several important areas are shabby and unattended, and interesting mid-century buildings on the south side seem to be in serious need of renovation. Resources, I am sure, are limited. Nevertheless, I came away with a favorable impression due to the overall beauty of the surroundings.

It's a nice campus but falling enrollment has hurt the financial situation. They had to layoff quite few people, a lot of the student recruitment staff was let go for example. Just not going to spend on landscaping in that situation. Neighborhood isn't the greatest but I keep expecting gentrification to hit the area because there are some nice houses that just need a little work and great access to Midtown and not a bad trip to downtown.

Weren’t they planning on doing a big University Ave corridor improvement?
