I think they would owe him something like $15 million if they fired him after the season. I think they hold onto him another year but I was wrong about Ash and Rutgers.

I'll put this question out. At what point does LU pay a head football coach P5 level money?

I would think if we do very well this season, that question should be discussed immediately. Right now the coaching situation at Rutgers and BYU qb injury may give us a better chance to benefit from those two games. Hypothetically speaking, we can go 8-4 or 9-3.

I think if we win the next 4 we should offer a long term contract around 3 million a year with a huge buyout. If we want to be a big boy we need to keep a coach that can take us there.

It’s a tough spot. If we have a good season that’s great. I’m not sure I’d offer the moon yet. By the end of the season our opponents could end up being miserably terrible and we should have won those games. I’d wait to pay until we’ve semi-consistently won some big games, not just the ones we’re supposed to. I’m not sure that I’m communicating my thoughts clearly but I don’t want to make any rash or unjustified commitments.

I think it depends on the coach. If Liberty is getting P5 level results or can poach someone from a P5 school, then I think LU has the budget flexibility to spend at a P5 level. If they hire a relatively unknown, they won't pay at a P5 level just because they can.

Specific to Freeze, I have no questions about his coaching ability or his recruiting skills. I have an issue with him leaving his school with NCAA violations. If we could get it in his contract that any NCAA violations reduces his buyout to $0, then we could cover ourselves monetarily should anything come up. With the passage of the California law (and soon to be other states) allowing college athletes to make money off their likeness, name, image, etc., then Freeze should have less opportunity to get us in trouble with the NCAA.

Interesting nugget I found today. This website says HCHF salary is 1.5 million per year. Thoughts?

That's a lot of money to a guy with NCAA violations who has been involuntarily been out of the game for a couple of years. I would have thought $1 million is more than fair until he proved himself. I guess he wants more than just to rehabilitate his image.

It’s higher than I thought. I was also thinking around 1 million. Now that I’ve digested it I think they may have went that high because the offensive coordinator jobs in the SEC are probably paying over 1 million.

It's my understanding that Freeze is blacklisted from any SEC position. If a school wanted to hire him, they would have to get the commissioner to sign off on it. If I remember correctly, Freeze was up for the Florida State OC position that was filled by Briles (Art's kid).
