Thank you Coach Gillespie for everything you have done for LU.
To me, this is a head scratcher.

I am in the middle about it. Obviously he has done great things in his career but I also think, especially in the BSC, we weren’t physically as prepared as we should have been. Hugh has someone in mind for the job and it might be good to get someone new in the position. Sometimes you have to move on from a great coach and I think it’s best to clean house. Granted it could be a flop but time will tell.

I thought it was odd as well. I think it is a bad move but will wait and see.

Is it really a head scratcher? I understand that folks don’t like the fact that Gillespie is leaving but that’s mostly based on emotion(since he’s been here stir a decade and some)I’m grateful that he’s done so much for the boys throughout the year he plus gain respect from them, but it’s time for change. The game is changing and so shall we if we want to progress and create something here on the mountain.

What makes you think strength and conditioning were a problem? You speak as if it were. Gillespie is a world record holder. That's a bold move by Freeze that better pay off. It's his team and I think he should be able to hire his own staff but now Freeze and his replacement better perform.

RE: Football Coaching Search
Change for the sake of change isn’t always a good thing. And yes, it’s still a bit of a head scratcher. You’d be hard pressed to find a strength coach with the credentials of Coach Gillespie and fits the Liberty mold. Not saying it can’t be done, but did it need to be. The one argument I heard that made even a smidgen of sense was Coach Freeze may want to concentrate less on physical strength and more on speed. Who knows? I do know Coach Gillespie was LU through and through and seemed to be good at his job. I guess we’ll see in the next few seasons if the right move was made.
Yes, I think this firing will be one Coach Freeze will be judged on, if not by the Admin, by the fans if a marked positive difference isn’t seen.
Actually, the new guy is the real head scratcher. Have you seen his track record on A Sea of Red? I am giving HCHF the benefit of the doubt for now. We’ll see how this all plays out. In my opinion we should have retained Bill Gillespie.

Never said that it was a problem; just made a point that the game is changing. Football is not the same like it was 10+ years ago. He may have credentials, but iq is more sound in most cases in today’s game than physical toughness. That’s one thing I’ve learned from playing lacrosse, and that can actually be applied to any contact sport. I believe it is time for change, and by the look of some replies, emotion is a main reason for folks not liking the changes. It is what it is; this is business.

Freeze said in multiple interviews that he was still evaluating Mike.

I want to give Coach Freeze the benefit of the doubt. But something just doesn’t feel right to me. Almost all coaches keep at least one old coach simply for continuity sake. I am trusting the process for now.

I guess he just felt the old staff wasn’t FBS ready.

RE: Football Coaching Search
The new RB coach is Bruce Johnson. He is another coach with recruiting coordinating experience.

"Johnson will come to Liberty after one season at Indiana as assistant athletic director for on campus recruiting. He was an assistant at Ole Miss from 2012-17 working in a variety of roles including tight ends, running backs, and offensive line."
http://www.aseaofred.com/bruce-johnson-t...-rb-coach/

"Ole Miss recorded three straight top 10 recruiting classes from 2013-15."

The first P5 job is open at Rutgers. Any chance HCHF would leave for them or even entertain it should they call?

I think Freeze will leave for the first major offer he gets, but only a southern school. Almost any SEC school, almost any ACC school in Virginia/Kentucky or below, and almost any Big 12 school in Oklahoma or Texas. Rutgers is too big of a rebuilding project for Freeze and rumors are going in a different direction.

We will see how much he's rebuilt his credibility after one year at LU but I am under the impression that the SEC has an unspoken "do not hire Freeze as head coach" policy in effect. Desperation won't stop someone from hiring him (Arkansas? South Carolina? Tennessee?) but they'll be on a really short leash with everyone looking to point out any hiccups to hope they get some sort of punishment.

VT may also be an option.
