Okay. Here's my problem. What was our gameplan to WIN?

At best, it seems our only goal was to not get blown out. But, when you are playing a team with superior size and talent, don't you need to adjust something if you are trying to win the game? Seems to me we showed up expecting to lose, from the coaches to the players. Yeah, we hung for a bit, but it was only a matter of time.

Why not press most of the game? Why not play zone most of the game? Why not do something DIFFERENT? Why even play this game if you aren't going to try something different? I don't ever want to see us playing the part of the Generals to the Harlem Globe Trotters. Completely demoralizing.

Simply put, Cacok has to play smarter. I understand his third foul was questionable, and he immediately regretted his first foul, but he's too valuable to the team to pick up those fouls before the first media TO. That said, Carolina's size really gave him trouble. Toews had a nice 4 minute stretch in the first half, but it was a big moment for him and I hope he'll be better for the experience. Two of our top three played poorly, and we had 24 turnovers. Despite a competitive first half and another strong effort by Cylla, there's not much positive to take from this one. I hope for a better effort against Furman.

Other than Cacok basically not having any offensive impact, I’m not very surprised at our showing. When the wheels fell off they really fell off. We lacked the composure to pull it together.

Their length affected us at all positions and in all elements of this game. Similar to UNCG who has great length. There were several times where unc extended the trap during a half court set and we couldn’t make the play we needed with a wide open Cacok. He missed some bunnies but at times we settled for pull up jumpers when I thought the penetration and dish to Cacok May have served us better.

Time to move on. This matchup is not a good one to measure our progress on. Furman will be because they’re probably about as good as UNCG despite being ranked right now.

We have a basic pattern to our games. We hang tough in the first half, the other coach adjusts their strategy and we do nothing, then we lose. Or, we get behind a lot in the first half and struggle to make a comeback, then we lose.

No, I did not expect us to win this game, but I also didn't expect us to get embarassed. If UNC and Roy Williams can adjust their game plan and decide to trap THE WHOLE SECOND HALF, why can't we adjust our game plan? What they were doing wasn't working so....THEY CHANGED.

Honestly, that's all I want to see. Some recognition by our coaches that we need to change strategy based on the team we're playing and what's happening in the game, and then make the change. Zone works, the press works, traps work.

Davidson adjusted their strategy in the second half and started atttacking the rim and going to the post. Everyone in Trask could see it. We should have at last tried a zone, a press, some traps to disrupt their change in strategy. Instead, we did nothing and gave up 50 points in the 2nd half. We did nothing, and gave up 56 points in the second half to UNC.

Good coaches have changed their strategy at halftime to beat us. Why can't we change?

I understand where you're coming from, but it's not quite true for all our games. We made adjustments against both Arkansas State and Eastern Illinois and blew them out. And I've watched when we've gone to a zone press and a basic zone. It was inaffective. I hope they continue to work on zone, because I agree it could be very affective. Don't know why we are having so much trouble getting it to work.

Because we don't box out well out of it. Basically, if the board doesn't come off close to Cacock(if he's even on the floor), the other team gets a second chance. That, coupled with not cheating towards the primary 3 point shooters leaving them open looks. That's my 2 cents, I've been watching the zone for 30 years with Cuse(and use it myself with the boys I coach). The boxing out in a zone is the toughest thing to teach IMO, because you are guarding a space, not a man.

Rebounding and potentially three pointers are the weakness, everyone knows that. But, it really helps to stop the drive and posting up as well as limits fouls. Areas we struggle in mightily. It worked effectively against UNC last night.

We also pressed full court a few times, and I thought it was really effective except for an over the top pass that went off the fingertips of Cylla that led to a dunk. Besides that, it caused some TO's and and general confusion for UNC.

I don't think we should do any of these things every time, but our defense is horrible and we need to shake it up. When we do these things, they work. It just seems we try them out, then abandon them, not to be seen in the second half of games.

I agree with most or your points, except it doesn't stop the post. It certainly does provide help in the vicinity which can help specifically when there are size mismatches like they were last night.

I actually rewatched the game on Watch ESPN and thought we defended decently in the first half. We just had nothing for Cam Johnson, too much of a mismatch. The Eastern Illinois game is still the only game we've defended and gave good effort for 40 minutes. Got to get back to whatever mentality we had going into that game the rest of the way.
