I'm bummed that I can't attend this one - my college roommate and I had made most excellent travel plans for every possible bowl except this one - too many scheduling conflicts to overcome. Was really hoping for Frisco Bowl....
So tip a few for me, and I'm SO happy the entire band is going to this one!

Geographically, it would be CMU, WMU, and Toledo, but we were bad for so long that I doubt any of them would consider us their main rival (or even a rival at all). Central is probably the closest thing to a true rival, but their fans would tell you that they think of Western as their main nemesis.
Our main rival is all the naysayers. EMU vs. Everybody!

Stats like yards rushing, or pass completion % go out the window when your focus is on not letting them in the endzone. A defense refuses to allow points by not giving up the big play. Mostly by mixing up looks in the front 7 and changing coverages, blitzing just enough to keep QB's & the OL honest (but not so much as to get torched). The bet is that an offense will make mistakes & punt, or get into the Red zone and be held to FG's. This has been their MO the past two years, and it works most of the time.
Where it can hurt you is in offensive possessions, as the other team tends to have the ball for longer drives = your offense gets the ball less (ie. Army's offense). This is what GSU will do, and it is a legitimate concern.
From my view, if you give this staff two weeks to prepare a defensive game plan... they will be fine.
You should also look at GSUs Defense! = time goes both ways!
Apparently GSU AD gave Creighton some bulletin board material today for the troops. Whining about how the great 9 win GSU team from the awesome Sunbelt conference, got stuck playing the 7 win EMU team from the lowly MAC.

Our guys will be ready to play!
I’m not really sure where these guys get off thinking they are so great. They may be good, but they are certainly not lightyears better than us. I’ll just leave these rankings here...
Georgia Southern offense avg YPG= 115th in the country
Georgia Southern defense avg YPG allowed= 44th in the country

I'm confused is Ga. Southern's record 9 - 3 or 3 - 9?

Steve, I accidently put down the wrong #'s for their defense. They actually sit at 44th in the nation in average YPG allowed. So, better than I originally stated... but certainly on par with us.
Both teams average right around 22 ppg given up defensively. Very similar on that side of the ball

Georgia Southern 5 year FBS, G5 History
5 years ago we switched from the Spread Option to the Pistol Option brought in by Head Coach Fritz. I myself prefer the Spread Triple Option that GSU ran over teams with in FCS. That said Fritz had great success the 2 years he was at Southern.
In GSUs first year in the FBS G5 Sun Belt, Southern went 9-3 in the conference and was leading GT and South Carolina in the last 2 to3 min of the game but lost. A very great start IMO. GSU was not bowl eligible in its first year of FBS.
In 2015 our second year in FBS GSU went 8-4 regular season * We took UGA or Georgia into double overtime but Georgia pulled it out the second overtime.
GSU faced 10-3 Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl Score GS 58, BG 27 First downs GS 26 - BG 15 Total Yards GS 534 - BG 326 Rushing Yards GS 452 - BG 116 Passing Yards GS 82 - 246 Time Possession GS 40:39 BG 19:21
When HC Fritz left after the end of 2015 season Southern went through 3 head coaches in 2 years and preformed poorly.
In 2018 our new Head Coach and staff are 9-3. The offense has been up and down this year but the defense has been steady. I feel good GSU's rebuilding year under a new HC, Staff & freshman QB.

How about you just talk about this year? All that's well and good, but we are 3 years removed from the GoDaddy Bowl. None of these people here care about that.
Yes, we're proud of where we came from and what we've done. Once again though, no one here is really going to care for you just coming on here and spouting off everything. If someone asks about our history, then yea, fill them in on who we are cause then they're actually interested in hearing more.
Hell, in terms of going to bowls, they've accomplished more lately than we have.
Also our QB is a sophomore, not freshman.

Nothing wrong with filling us in with some info on where you guys have been and where you’re going from here.
But you are right, given our history and where we have been and what we have had to put up with before the Creighton era... this bowl trip is all about us, and the fans who have endured over the years. Our focus is on us for sure.

I mean I don't have issues with people talking about our team and all, but sometimes folks can go overboard. Posting a full statline from our last bowl game in 2015 is a bit much, cause there's very few people still in the program that were on the field that day. It really isn't relevant. I'd rather keep it to the present.
In the spirit of our history: We started our program in FCS(1-AA) in 1982 and won our first national championship by 1985. We won 6 total national championships before transitioning to FBS in 2014. In our first year we became the first team in history to transition to FBS and go undefeated in conference play, winning the Sun Belt while remaining ineligible for a bowl. We went to the GoDaddy Bowl in 2015 where we defeated the MAC champions WMU. Our coach left prior to that game and we made one of the worst hires in the modern era, who ended up getting fired last year. We appointed long time assistant Chad Lunsford as interim HC and then made him the full time guy at the end of the season. The staff he's put together has gotten us to 9-3, which has been an incredible turnaround.
There's a lot more details we could go into, but that's a good Cliff's Notes version.
Looking forward to the game next Sat. Hope to see a lot of EMU faithful make the trip, we should have a good contingent in attendance.
