FAU fans...

I'll be flying into Ft Lauderdale the morning of the 17th and returning on the 19th with the wife wanting to stay at a beachfront property (I'm a Marriott guy). Is there a certain city you'd recommend as far as Boca, Ft. Lauderdale, Delray, Pompano, etc? I'd like to be no more than 20 minutes from the stadium, but could handle 30 minutes.

What about restaurants? Does the bowl usually have a team event the night before the game?

I've been to Ft Lauderdale maybe 25-30 times over the last 4 years and the bowl game.

There's a Marriott's BeachPlace Towers 2 blocks north of Las Olas on Ft Lauderdale beach. Pricey, usually well over $200 a night this time of year. Probably a 10 to 15 minute drive from the air port. Las Olas has many places to eat and night life. There's probably a handful of bars and places to eat with in a couple blocks from the hotel. The drive is no more than 30 minutes...depending on how you drive 20-22 (me :) )minutes taking I-95 (about 5 minute drive from hotel/beach)

I personally would take A1A and allow 40 minutes...its where the super rich live. There's a 100 million dollar home on this coastal drive. I stopped while it was almost finished and went inside.....some people have too much money.

Pompano has a casino if you like to gamble...mostly condos on beach side in this area. There's a free walk out pier, we usually see some type of huge sea creature when we walk on it....caught 2 sharks off it and seen 3 more caught. Mostly 3 to 6fters.

Boca is mostly retired people or it seems like it. Delray is a neat area but things are too close together for my taste. Billy Joel lives there or close and was eating breakfast in a little restaurant that we stopped at. They said he visits often.

Miami is only a 35 to 40 minute drive from Ft Lauderdale (depending on the time of night or day) getting back can take over an hour..

As i said been there 25 to 30 times...3 years ago made the 15 (30 round trip) drive 7 times over 4 months. Three of them for Western FB, then the bowl game then again for basketball. Take shorts and the water is usually perfect for swimming..not too hot, not too cold.

Two days is about 5 too short :)

There is a Marriott in Delray. Stayed there once. Pretty nice place right across from the ocean.

I would recommend the Deerfield Beach Wyndham or the Embassy suites deerfield beach. Deerfield beach is right next to Boca.

We stayed there before and it wasn't bad but there's a downside to this area...seems to get the seaweed more often than farther south...By the Sea or Ft Lauderdale beach. But seaside/beachside is limited to mostly condos and this is one of the few beachside hotels. But if you are flying in and out of Ft Lauderdale staying in that area is only a short drive to Boca. Most of the time its takes less time getting from Ft Lauderdale to Boca than across town in cities like Dallas and Atlanta

The seaweed has more to do with wind direction an time of year.

I would stay in Ft. Lauderdale for all the reasons stated above.

Delray is awesome as well. Atlantic Ave is like 10 min from campus and where a lot of students go out, but tons of nice places to eat and drink there as well.

RE: Boca Raton Bowl Travel
I love this area so to me there is no wrong pick....

wish Western was playing a bowl in Boca or for that matter any part of south Fla. If Western had not changed coaches I probably would have spent most of next Nov in Ft Lauderdale. I love driving so if I down there for a week I will be driving north on A1A at least once for a afternoon. South on 95 to Miami at least once.

As soon as the Western basketball schedule came out the first thing I looked for was to see when Western plays at FIU and FAU. With this new scheduling.....Western doesn't make that trip this winter. I feel cheated LOL

If you want to have a bad time...follow this guys advice. Beach Place...good god no. Boca just a bunch of retirees...must have not been here since the late 80's and 90's. I would stay in Delray Beach, Boca Raton or Deerfield Beach. Three will be events at Meisner Park...which is a bunch of restaurants and boutiques. Check out the bowl website.

I go to this hotel when I attend FAU games. I recommend Delray unless you want to go south for some reason. Cranes Beach Hotel is nice too.

I highly recommend the Wyndom Deerfield hotel in Pompano Beach. Have been there 4 times and it is extraordinary and about a 2 minute walk from the fishing peer which is worth seeing just to observe the people. Excellent food as well.

I think you have your beaches mixed up, Pompano's pier and beach is a few miles south. I believe you are talking about Hillsboro Beach and pier.

We stayed at the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort once and I agree with you its worth the money. And one of the few Hotels that's actually on the beach in the span from Boca to Ft Lauderdale (by the sea)

You can play on the beach during the day and fish off the Deerfield pier (no license needed for the pier only) at night which if your driving you can bring a fishing pole.

Stop in at the Whale's Rib for some smoked fish dip, mahi mahi, and rum runners.
