Ten years ago today the Bearcats clinched their first big east championship and bcs bowl. I wrote about it for my own amusment with a focus on what I consider the most important 3 game stretch in bearcat football history.

That was great! Thanks for sharing it. As a long suffering UC fan, I still could not believe the sight of UC fans throwing oranges at the end of the seaon. And then I got to go watch my school play in the Orange Bowl.

Wonderful memories.

My memory is that the Syracuse win clinched the Orange Bowl. It was an afternoon game and when we won the fans through oranges on the field.

The OB game itself was frustrating as in close we simply could not score. I remember thinking at some point up close the QB has to go under center.

Getting to a major bowl for me screamed for a victory to validate our program.

Our flight home to Cleveland as the plan3 from Miami to either Tampa or Orlando was a true puddle jumper.

Syracuse game clinched the outright conference championship but we held tiebreakers over other teams. We were going to the orange bowl win or lose against Syracuse.

However... Pitt v. WVU game the day before may have been when the bcs bid was actually clinched. I'd have to go back and look.

Ten years ago was I was in my 50th year of attending UC games. Most of us fans ever expected to get to the promised land but for two years we did. Honestly do not think it will ever happen again because the establishment of ESPN and P5. Sad but I fear true.

This short time in the promised land has happened to others. Think Army, Navy.

It was the Pitt-WVU game.

Thanks to all for getting the story correct.

The Syracuse game convinced me to get season tickets. I usually just bought tickets on game week. I could not get good seats for the Syracuse game - so - I fixed that problem.

We now do 2 games a year. My wife got tired of the trip.

Ah, back in the day when good performance on the field resulted in a rewarding bowl matchup.

If we won the conference this year we'd almost certainly be in bcs bowl.

True. I believe in most cases the winner of the AAC, assuming they have a good clean record, will take the NY6 game. The only difference is that now it's not written in stone like back then.

Either way, great post, Mark. Thanks for the flashback. Great times to be a bearcat. I gotta believe we're headed towards similarly good times.

Great point; there is no longer any margin for error and if we assume the AAC is consistently the best G5 that almost implies quality competition will yield an in-conference loss along the way somewhat regularly. If so, should an undefeated MAC team claim that access bowl over a one loss AAC team? P6 only occurs in my mind if playoff expansion opens the door for the AAC to have a guaranteed bowl spot and the new TV deal places the conference clearly in between the G5 and P5 for media rights.

BearcatMark--great piece of writing. It was fun re-living one of the two greatest seasons ever for UC football. Now let's see if the 2018 'Cats can go make some history today with a rare double digit win season.
