Current RPI's
so I know RPI is dead but Warren Nolan is still tracking it live.... Kind of fun to look at it as a known way of comparing things....

right now, believe it or not, the Big East is #4. Behind SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12. ACC is 5, Pac 12 is 6, and AAC is down at 9 right now....

looking at the really early team RPI's-
Butler 25
Georgetown 34
St John's 38
Xavier 76
Providence 84
Seton Hall 107
DePaul 114
Marquette 119
Creighton 159
Villanova 246

It's going to be really interesting to compare these next week to the NET ratings that come out.

And it's just strange to see Villanova 87 spots behind anyone....

what would be bad for Nova in the old RPI is that they would be right now record wise 1.2-2.8.

No question, we are down and it may take until next year's class to arrive to get back up. My expectation coming into the season was a decent finish in the BE (did not expect to win it) a tourney bid with a win or 2. This is a team that was decimated by early departures in a program that has been phenomenal over the last 6 years at roster management. Have no doubt we will be back to elite again, but its going to take some time. Again, all that said, clearly, wouldn't change the last 5 years for anything.

RE: Current RPI's
yeah definitely true with Nova. Just thought Saturday was so strange with the top recruits not playing much at all....

Does this feel like 2012 at all(that was the year finished 5-13 in the Big East and 13-19 overall)?

The thing that is interesting with roster management- is really I think both DiVicenczo and Spellman would have probably been gone this year had things gone to plan originally. Were it not for the broken wrist I think for Donte and the year of ineligibility for Spellman- they probably would have both been gone(Spellman almost guaranteed) this season. After the years off- Nova thought they had more time- but this is probably close to originally what they thought.

I think it'll be interesting with Quinerly- if he doesn't play much, will he stick it out?

It could be like 2012 but I hope not. I think clearly the expectations are higher so this current team is driving the fans nuts.

In terms of DD and AS, not sure on whether they would have been gone--- I don't think Spellman would have as he was physically not as strong and his endurance benefited from a year with our strength coach (who is fantastic). Donte, who knows, he was someone else that benefited from the year off and bulked up. Just compare how he got around Simpson and Matthews (UM) and out muscled them versus Gillespie. If they were on track to go, Jay would have had planned openings to fill. No doubt Brunson and Bridges were leaving (both did academically graduate) but everyone knew they were leaving early.

I hope Quinerly does stick it out. It worked for kids like Hilliard, Hart and Jenkins to learn the system, PLAY DEFENSE and then it will come. Arch and Brunson were stronger physically that JQ and they were in your face defenders from day 1. He is smaller than I expected and is not always the quickest guy on the floor anymore. He said the game is moving too fast for him a few weeks back. That said, as much as I would love for him to be the point over Gillespie, he has to buy into the system or he will ride the pine. It is Jay's way and it works.

Unfortunately a lot of guys now- if they don't buy in- they just leave rather than stick it out. transfer numbers are exploding of course. It's sickening quite frankly- but it is reality now in days.

Any chance that guys like Quinerly are similar to the types of guys that Wright was getting that led to the 2012 season? They've had the huge uptick in recruiting....

Of course there is a chance, but Jay specifically changed the type of kid he was recruiting after that period. So, unless it was a flat out miss, JQ, Swider and Slater shouldn't fall into that category.

yeah. It's just interesting the DNP on Saturday....

Man, what is up with Xavier? Up what 32-13, it's now X down 58-53 under 8 timeout. so a 45-21 run for San Diego St. Close to a must win for X- don't want to head into final game with Iowa St or Illinois needing that to avoid going 0-3 in Hawaii.

RE: Current RPI's
There are plenty of ridiculous rankings in both RPI and NET. Neither system can be taken seriously at this point. On the other hand Kenpom seems far more realistic, top to bottom. Quite frankly after all the scuttlebutt about NET being released today, I'm disappointed it's such a flop. No one on any committee will take those rankings seriously.

well, even if the ratings don't settle- which they will- how teams are grouped tier 1/2/etc. are decided by this...

Heard someone say that it's like Ken Pom- but with no preseason biases built into it at all whatsoever.....

I will say MOV is huge. See Furman as a great example. Wins over #38 Villanova and #148 Loyola- both on the road..... But a 2 point win, and 2 OT wins- and they're only #48 right now..... Definitely no longer winning the games is the only factor.

1 thing that will be interesting...

Tonight #51 Clemson plays #14 Nebraska.

it'll be interesting to see the impact of that game tomorrow on #85 Seton Hall and #36 Creighton. See how much opponent strength matters to the rating...

RE: Current RPI's
The thing that's funny is Big East fans reaction being what hoops22 was. That oh the committee won't take these ratings seriously.... I think Big East fans right now are the only objective is to win the game and that's it. It's pretty obvious that's no longer the case... Close calls vs bad teams are going to hurt you a lot more than it used to....

Also- this is 1st release less than 3 weeks into the season. I mean current RPI which was used before has Ga Southern #2, Loyola Marymount 4, Radford 10, Murray St 11, Citadel 13, etc. Don't hear folks complaining about that. So to act like the committee won't take these ratings serious because of 1st response is frankly over the top.

There are still over 4000 games left to go in the season, so any ratings are questionable. But you can definitely see some of the factors in play. MOV means a LOT to it. You can see why Furman is so low despite the Nova win.

Frankly, I think a lot of Big East Fans are upset the system changed at all.

I think I heard the best comparison used on Twitter......

the ratings yesterday are akin to in baseball after 1 day a guy batting .750 being listed as #7 in MLB for hitting.
