Loving the huge jump for Marquette. Big opportunities coming up again against Wisconsin and Buffalo.

RE: Current RPI's
I think the one that I'm most surprised about is Villanova. 1 spot better despite that awful game with La Salle. I guess they got helped by Michigan's 2 big wins this week and FSU beating Purdue.

Clearly Stever, Its because Nova gets all the breaks and there is a recency bias. lol

all I'm saying is that I would have thought a 7 point road win vs a team in the 300's(and deep in the 300's at that) would have cost more. But those other wins really helped Nova out a lot making their loss much better and the 1 win better as well....

RE: Current RPI's
1 thing the NCAA has is a nitty gritty sheet. On that they have average NET opponent- and then that ranked.... So kind of like SOS so far.... St John's for instance- average opponent is 189. That ranks 219th of all teams....

thru yesterday
St John's #32 NET/219 NET Opp rating/137 RPI SOS
Marquette #34/39/17
Villanova #35/177/84
Creighton #44/10/6
Butler #52/55/71
Georgetown #57/137/110
Xavier #63/11/57
DePaul #69/263/243
Seton Hall #86/19/19
Providence #101/165/85

avg net opponent rating- 109.5
avg RPI SOS- 82.9

it'll be interesting to see the team sheets when the NCAA starts to release them to see if this average NET opponent is used like SOS was before.

The one that is interesting is Georgetown. Everyone thought their schedule wasn't good. But It's where it is right now- and remaining opponents are 16-16 so far vs D1 schools. Could they have a bit more wiggle room than folks thought to make the tourney?

I will say this. If Creighton and Xavier go in front of the committee at like 17-14 they will make very interesting and telling statements about the new selection process.

Man, the NET hates Providence.

RE: Current RPI's
wow the conference NET numbers comparison with RPI not good for the Big East...

ACC- RPI 86.60 NET 60.73 +25.87
SEC- RPI 89.50 NET 68.07 +21.43
P12- RPI 103.42 NET 88.67 +14.75
AAC- RPI 128.08 NET 115.25 +12.83
B12- RPI 58.00 NET 50.80 +7.20
B10- RPI 44.93 NET 42.57 +2.36
Big East- RPI 58.6 NET 60.9 -2.3

I think the big takeaway is that the NET doesn't reward anywhere near as much for moral victories.... Big East only 4-20 vs tier 1 games right now. Of the big 4- that's the worst- B12 9-9, B10 18-31, ACC 13-17.

RE: Current RPI's
so they added some stuff to the NET Nitty Gritty report today.... Net Efficency/TVI

TVI- Team Value Index: It includes the opponent, whether a team won or lost and the game location. There is no scoring margin in this component.

Net Efficency/TVI current NET
Marquette 51 65- 19th in NET
Villanova 82 10- 27th in NET
St John's 36 278- 29th in NET
Butler 43 104- 45th in NET
Creighton 108 13- 58th in NET
Seton Hall 99 76- 79th in NET
DePaul 45 312- 82nd in NET
Xavier 132 48- 87th in NET
Providence 90 133- 94th in NET
Georgetown 124 168- 111th in NET

RE: Current RPI's
Here's what the NET ratings were from Dec 28(after Friday night prior to start of conference play) to yesterday
Dec 28/yesterday
Marquette 12/21 -9
St John's 26/37 -11
Villanova 35/26 +9
Butler 39/52 -13
Creighton 49/56 -7
Seton Hall 59/47 +12
Providence 72/85 -13
Xavier 82/80 -2
DePaul 106/92 +14
Georgetown 133/98 +35

St John's and Butler will go up from their wins last night- so their drops won't be quite as much. Creighton will as a result of last night be even further down. DePaul will lose a lot of their improvement from the game last night.

edit- and here it is with last night....
Dec 28/today
Marquette 12/20 -8
St John's 26/34 -8
Villanova 35/24 +11
Butler 39/48 -9
Creighton 49/58 -9
Seton Hall 59/49 +10
Providence 72/82 -10
Xavier 82/81 -1
DePaul 106/112 -6
Georgetown 133/94 +39
avg as of 12/28- 61.3
avg today- 60.2
So right now basically Villanova and St John's traded places. Creighton and Seton Hall traded places. Marquette, Butler, Creighton, and DePaul down 6-9 spots. Georgetown up big. While the league is up as a whole, the individual teams aren't as well set up. instead of teams 4-6 being 39/49/59, they're 48/49/58. Providence being down hurts as now games at Providence aren't tier 1.

RE: Current RPI's
you know one thing we kind of brushed off yesterday, but it's there- and actually more today- Butler has passed Seton Hall.... Butler is 47 today while Seton Hall is 49.....

Seton Hall is really interesting.... They're lucky quite frankly in that St John's game or they'd be really in some trouble right now- they'd be down around 65 if not even lower.

RE: Current RPI's
so NET's updated right now-
For Big East:
Marquette 21
Villanova 28
St John's 42
Butler 44
Seton Hall 56
Creighton 64
Xavier 79
Providence 84
Georgetown 95
DePaul 101
As I've said- Seton Hall is really getting down there.

Big game for Creighton tomorrow.

RE: Current RPI's
There are many flaws with NET, which hopefully the committee rectifies for the tournament, but it is hilarious to see Marquette behind Buffalo, Wisconsin AND Louisville, despite beating all three.

RE: Current RPI's
1 game doesn't mean you're automatically better....

Buffalo- is 7-1 in road games(to only 2-2 for Marquette). Also 1 vs 3 losses
Wisconsin- 20 spots better in SOS and an extra road win
Louisville- 40 spots better in SOS and an extra road win

Buffalo 14 RPI
Louisville 18 RPI
Marquette 20 RPI
Wisconsin 34 RPI

Like it or not, the NET probably isn't going anywhere. Marquette being behind all 3 of those isn't crazy at all. only one that is really even questionable is Wisconsin.

Marquette isn't the only example. Duke just beat Virginia, yet is still behind Virginia. If NET ends up taking away head-to-head results, then it takes away the meaning of those individual games.

Buffalo has played two ranked teams (one was West Virginia, who is clearly not as good as preseason projections had; the other was Marquette). Marquette beat them by 18, putting up over 100 points on them. It wasn't even close. Now, if it was a spot or two, sure. There can be some deviation - but it's ten spots. Marquette beat three ranked top-15 teams in three weeks (something Buffalo has not done).

The latest bracketology has Buffalo as a #4 seed and Marquette a #5 (which appears much closer than NET shows), which I can live with.

head to head isn't the only thing.

Also, while Kansas St might have been top 15 when they played them- they're only #36 right now. So they aren't even a tier 1 win.... The ranking when you play them is complete and utterly meaningless. It's the rank right now.
