Burning redshirts left and right, often late in the season and with no consideration to the long term. Shuffling quarterbacks like Lane Kiffin changes jobs. Incompetent clock management. Bizarre play calling (to a level that Laycock would only approach in a drunken stupor). His locker room speech on ESPN during a Thursday night game back in '15 encapsulated everything about his tenure at the program. Lots of talk about "man-building" but seemingly little attention to the details that are required to be successful. As for his recruiting, lots of hype that dissipated after year 3. Bronco Mendenhall inherited an undisciplined, disorganized mess. I've been as critical of JL as anyone on here at times, and it's fair to argue that we underachieved in recent years (2012 and 2016 were particularly notable). But I never questioned his overall competence.

Recruiting at W&M is a unique challenge. We'll see if his delivery is as solid as his sales pitch.

This is the final post I will make about this hire as my view is pretty clear. It is uninspired and reflects poorly on Huge and her vision for the future of the program. There must be dozens of highly competent, intelligent young coordinators and some head coaches out there that would love this opportunity. Instead we hire a UVA retread who peaked a decade ago with a stacked UR roster loaded with upperclassmen that Clawson recruited. I think I remember before the game in 09 that Richmond had 18 or so 5th or 4th year players on their 2 deep. I hope he makes me eat my words, but I doubt it.

Well said. I hope he proves us wrong. I will root for him to succeed though.

I agree with everything ttgwm02 wrote and especially with his last paragraph. I also think that tribeintexas' remark was, itself, well said and that is how I feel.

One comment on this sentence from ttgwm02: "Huge and her vision for the future of the program". One can conjecture (as some on this board have) that Huge's vision is all about basketball. So bring in London for 3-4 years. If he does great, then great. If he fails, then that would have basically been a decade of bad football, for a sport that is losing interest nationally anyway, especially among young people. So, after those 3-4 years then maybe there would be more support (or simply less griping) to de-emphasize football while strengthening basketball. I have no way of knowing whether this is true but it would not surprise me. So, for those of us who love our Tribe football, the best thing that could happen would be for London to be wildly successful right away.

My son is a 30 year old UVA grad, and he texted me his condolences upon seeing the news that we hired London. He also texted me that he hoped I like watching an offense that consists of running up the middle or throwing slant pattern passes. You can analyze it all you want, but I will believe my son's analysis above any others. He is a sports fanatic.

If we bring on Marion as the OC, I wouldn't worry about slants and runs up the middle. He runs an uptempo, Gus Malzahn style offense that bares little resembleance to what London ran at UVA. CAA is a different animal, but Marion's offense averaged 33.6pts & 471 yards (278 pass/193 run) per game.

Just don't look at Howard's defensive stats lol.

I'll take that over our current offense.

Yep...

“School is cool”?

Here we go again. I’m having flashbacks to UVA.

And there it is a nutshell. All about me. The cop story. The gun story.

Does anyone ever remember JL talking about himself like this?!

I don’t think this guy prepared his remarks. Sorry, I continue to think this is a really bad decision.

Can we at least enjoy the honeymoon before we tar and feather the coach that hasn't even met the team or lost a game yet?

I had the same feelings as you during his speech. But I'm not gonna put a ton of weight on his introductory presser. As long as he wins games and keeps the program clean, he can practice his standup routine during interviews for all I care.

RE: Mike London Analysis Article: WMSB
None of us know who was open to being the coach that followed behind Coach Laycock. There was a pretty darn competent advisory group for the selection and I certainly think if their support was unanimous, as stated, that Mike London was the best and right choice from the pool.

I wish there had been specific reference to that he had learned and grown as a coach going forward from his past HC failures (and successes) rather than a general statement about life perspectives. Time will tell whether he's made that step or if destined to repeat. Hope Williamsburg will provide traction to prove the former. It will not be personally easy for him going into Cville next fall.

Glad to see the press conference be a collective representation of the Tribe Family. It was done right.

I, also, hope that, both, London and Laycock will reestablish and continue a close mentoring/feedback relationship. It could become one of Jimmye's best legacies, and would say a lot about our new Coach.

I don't care what he says in a presser. Maybe he just wanted to introduce himself to those who aren't familiar with his background.

I want him to do two things 1) maintain the integrity of the program and 2) win. Literally, anything else he does, good or bad, means nothing to me. I'll need up to a year before I can honestly decide if he accomplished those two things.

I personally enjoyed hearing him speak about his background. For the majority of Tribe fans unacquainted with him, it serves as an introduction to the fan base, and to the players.

It also sheds light on the qualities that Huge and Rowe were looking for in a HC. He didn't just magically come up with those words on the spot. They were the answers he gave and spoke about during his interview.

Very interesting to see and hear. No one should be reading into this that "he made the presser all about him." That'd be over-reading, likely due to previously held biases.
