NMSU played 13 players, including 12 who played 10 minutes+.
I have a lot of respect to the apparent discipline Jans shows in managing his players minutes. Starters and first off the bench capped right around 20 minutes. The next 6 each get 11-15 minutes of meaningful game time.
It'd be easy enough to let your starters stay out there for 25-30 minutes, and maybe what I am seeing is pure coincidence, but Jans seems intentional in getting everyone on the floor. That kind of experience all the way down the bench has to show up come conference play and tournament time, right?
Jans stated it wasn't his intention to play everyone. In fact Keyon Jones, a key contributor last year played about 1 minute in the first half. I think when we pulled away, Jans decided to let others play. He also said, in the after-game interview, that he told the guys getting minutes that it was their time to show the coaches what they could do and that some of them missed the boat.
Bottom line, I think he was trying to keep some things close to the vest for our upcoming games, he has not yet settled on a starting lineup/rotation (he said he went right up until tipoff to decide on a starting 5) and the rotation is going to get significantly shorter in the coming weeks.
Last season, Jans went 9 deep in his rotation... AJ Harris, Zach Lofton, Sidy Ndir, Jemerrio Jones, Johnathan Wilkins, Shunn Buchanan, Keyon Jones, Johnny McCants, and Eli Chuha. The others played sparingly.
This season, I think Jans will go 10 deep with his rotation... AJ Harris, JoJo Zamora, Clayton Henry, Ivan Aurrecoechea, Mohamed Thiam, Shunn Buchanan, Terrell Brown, Keyon Jones, Eli Chuha, and CJ Bobbitt. Once Johnny McCants is healthy, Bobbitt will drop out of the rotation and McCants will be added. The others will play sparingly.

My gut tells me, Cal State Bakersfield will give TCU a good game and is better than WAC fans think. But then again it could be gas.

Another poster posted on Aggie alert that they looked like a Menzies team and that's not a good thing. They need a leader. I didn't think AJ looked like a true leader yet but I could be wrong.
GCU's biggest problem is Majerle. If Majerle had a better rotation and attacked the basket with their size advantage probably could have won. The Western Washington transfer is really good, way better than Milstead or whatever his name is. GCU continues to struggle on the road.
Utah Valley is always disciplined and sharp. I think they will be a contender for 2nd. Their advantage is Pope. Good coach, great mentor, no BS.
Seattle hung for awhile and ran out of gas. Something is missing with Hayford as a coach but I can't put my finger on it. He is a consistent 20 game a year coach but don't know if he will take Seattle to greatness, or even a WAC title.
The rest of the WAC...
It's the first game with a completely new team besides Kavas Means and Nettles. And on the road vs Stanford. I wouldn't take this as a defying game in Hayford's abilities as a HC.
Stanford did an amazing job of shutting down Kavas while the new transfers struggled. What was the most suprising is Oregon State transfer and walk on Terrell Brown had 16 points. Did not see that coming from anywhere. Hopefully he continues this play from the bench. To get that from a walk on would be amazing.
The JUCO transfer Hundal had 13 points and a couple threes on top of that. He looks really good despite a lot of other WAC fans diminishing him because he played JUCO in California.
It's one game and there is a lot to work on but a lot to like. Tune up game vs Puget Sound in four days

Nope it wasn't gas. They are up by 11 on TCU right now... 29-18. I had a feeling with most of CSUB's guard play returning, they were going to be much improved. I was unsure of their big men but they are long and athletic and back to their aggressive style of defense. CSUB will be a factor this season.

CSUB is up by 9 at the half... 37-28. The Roadrunners are back. Fortunately, NMSU has the guard play to handle CSUB's defensive pressure. I'm not sure the rest of the conference does. This is now a five team race for the WAC regular season title.

TCU pulls it out 66-61. Cal State Bakersfield's guards are tough but TCU figured out to hound them and force the CSUB interior players to score the ball. They couldn't score enough to keep the lead and win. Still, CSUB will be in the heat of the WAC race.

Bako is officially on my radar for this season. Impressive showing at TCU and really, Bako gave the game away. It was theirs to win.

TCU outscored Bakersfield by 14 in the second half. Had TCU came to play in the first half, Bakersfield would had been ran out of the gym.

It was a 2 point game with 21 seconds left. Excellent analysis. You must be a "coach".

With that view point in mind, had NDSU came to play in the first half then NMSU would’ve won by less than 3.

Watching Chicago St/ND. New unis look good. Almost a Baylor kind of feel, with the dark and neon greens. Cougars hanging in during this first half. Down 4 with 3:30 left.

Chicago State down 35-40. That is damn good considering they are 30 point underdogs.

Coach, if you are going to use an argument as to why CSUB was able to hang with TCU, the best thing to point out is TCU played the game without its starting point guard Jaylen Fisher and potentially another starter in wing forward Kouat Noi. Both averaged double figures a season ago. Regardless, CSUB gave TCU a very good game and had them on their heels until the end.

UTEP started hot, NMSU took a little while to get going, but they ended up winning by a ton. Congrats to Cal Baptist, their first win as a DI school. It was against a non DI school, but still...
