RE: INDEPENDENT
Someone can fact check me on this because I'm not completely sure, but Rice would get more money from ODU winning a game in the NCAA than the CUSA TV deal? If so, then go ODU!

Yes. Every game played is another unit funded. I don't know what the TV deal provides exactly, but in 2018, CUSA's 2 units provided $3,276,000 for the conference, and $3,423,568 in 2017. (See last point for how 2 units don't exactly translate like this.)

I believe the CUSA tournament team gets a larger cut, but cannot find any documentation on how it's determined.
One thing I did not realize - the units for each year are actually the sum of units earned over the previous 6 seasons. So making a bigger run helps out over multiple years (for those conferences who might normally only get 1 unit). And a power conference having a bad year is usually made up for with better results in the other seasons, smoothing things out.
Quote:The basketball fund provides for moneys to be distributed to Division I conferences based on their performance in the Division I men’s basketball championship over a six-year rolling period (for the period 2007-2012 for the 2012-13 distribution). Independent institutions receive a full unit share based on its tournament participation over the same rolling six-year period. The basketball fund payments are sent to conferences and independent institutions in mid April each year.

Perhaps I'll look into something like Hulu Live, but I'd prefer to give my money to media services that seem to be on the ascent (Netflix, Hulu, Disney + perhaps in a few months), rather than groups like ESPN which seem to be on freefall. It's been decades since I've watched a Sportscenter.
Interestingly, ESPN and Disney are actually corporate relatives, as I believe they have the same parent company. I affectionately call the conglomerate ABCDESPNF (D standing for Disney, F used to stand for ABC Family, but can now stand for some of the Fox pieces that are being acquired). Perhaps I need to add an M for Marvel in there as well (or MCU). Is ABCDESPNFM too much of a mouthful?

"Relatives" ... as in Parent/child? (Disney owns ESPN.)
A list of Disney holdings is far too long to post here ... but there is this nice, compact infographic (click twice to expand/enlarge for reading):

RE: INDEPENDENT
Thanks! So many letters to add:
H - History Channel or Hulu
L - Lifetime Channel
P - Pixar
NG - National Geographic
L or SW - Lucas Films or Star Wars
So I think the following works, for at least a shorthand - ABCDESPNGHLMP

Already taken. As a personification of the search engine, I'd expect you to know that.
