Remarkable that the five starters off that 2014/15 CAA regular season champion team all went on to play pro ball, with four still playing.

Honestly, I think about this every couple of weeks. We've had the talent and coaches over the years to win basketball and football championships. In this case, one additional player on that 14-15 roster...Nathan Knight...and we walk through the CAA. Sean subbing for Nate with Omar, Terry, Marcus, and Daniel and that team wins 24 regular season games and the CAA title.

Was just watching this video (probably for the 10th time) today...As a '15 grad, can someone please educate me on what in the world they were referring to during the video -- they made it seem like W&M athletics were on the brink of being defunded in '74 before they revised their goals.

The ensuing fundraising video was the obvious next step in their plan, but I'd love some background info from the time period.

This is basically it, in a very small nutshell. Others will certainly be able to ad to the narrative. I was in school, at the time, and remember the game vs. Richmond (at UR Stadium) the day after the BOV voted to keep football going. It was a glorious 54-12 shellacking of the Spiders. One of my best W&M sports memories.

The following is from an old newspaper report on the death of Jim Root, Jimmye's predecessor: (the italics are mine).

Jim Root's tenure at W&M was marked by debate about the future of football. Some factions (hard line academics) at the school wanted to de-emphasize or even eliminate the sport due to increasing costs and a different view of how W&M should be perceived nationally. W&M eventually found a home after the NCAA created Division I-AA, where the school still competes today.

Hope this helps.

Many students were, also, protesting student fees going to fund the program and the potential increase in fees. I vividly recall a heavily attended debate/protest outside one evening. It really could have gone either way prior to the vote.

Wow -- thanks to you both for the insight. As a recent alum, I can honestly say that this does not surprise me. I think that several current students would do the same (protest sports, when given the right opportunity -- see recent example: Griffin statue). But with many of the athletic programs' improvements coming from private funding, we're safe from a lot of the scrutiny (keep those donations flowing!).

With that being said, I do personally fear for the future of W&M sports with a seemingly increasingly academics-first student body. I like to make the joke, you can spot W&M students in backpacks walking through Zable's lot on gameday en route to the library.

Obviously, this is hyperbole (to a certain extent...), but as a co-founder of the Blog, I've found that the WMSB's "most passionate" fans tend to be alums -- and not typically recent alums (think, at least 10 years back).

Winning now becomes paramount, in order to attract as many eyeballs and "butts in seats" as possible, as does overall fan experience at the games themselves. It's no longer, "just about the game."

In an increasingly fast-paced, always-connected world, it now takes far more effort to attract the younger generation to sports, with so many other entertainment options out there, and increasingly at their fingertips via smart phones (think Netflix, video games, social media, etc). These are actually alarming macro-level trends that the four major U.S. professional leagues (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA) are dealing with as we speak, and trying to solve at headquarters.

I believe in Huge, and think that she's made incredibly strong progress over just a year's time. The future is bright, but there's a lot of work still to be done in this new world.

As a fellow recent alum, I tend to agree about the most passionate fans being older alumni. But I have always thought that the apathy of our student body was overstated. Zable was absolutely packed when the football team went on its 09-10 run of success. I remember they ran out of student tickets at the '10 VMI game. I realize that was 8 years ago at this point but I've always been impressed by the willingness of our students to support our better teams even though it isn't a natural fit for a lot of them.
