Petrino is going to get fired and Louisville will hire Jeff Brohm. Hopefully Meyer stays awhile and we get a few more years of Fickell!

My neighbor whose son in law is an Associate AD at OSU says Luke will not ever be the HC.

There are over $14,000,000 reasons not to fire Beto Petrino.

This is the same thing I hear from people with "connections" around town.

So I guess the logical conclusion would be that if he's never getting that job, he'll probably jump at the next big offer and likely be gone from UC either next month or the year after.

Not if he’s smart. You don’t want to pull a Butch Jones and go to a job where you are likely to fail. Fick has a job for life here as long as he makes bowl games. He should be patient and wait for a truly great midwestern job. The Midwest is his wheelhouse. Stick with what you know. The truly great Midwest jobs are ND, MSU, OSU, UM, and PSU. While he waits for one of those he can make millions here, win, build his personal brand, and provide stability for his young family. Wait for the perfect situation, don’t just jump at the first P5 offer.

He’s also not going to get that chance if he jumps to the first terrible P5 opportunity that comes up. Waiting for the right job is key. Rutgers and Illinois would both offer more money and P5 glory. He’d be a fool to take either one.

Being a HC in the AAC is still better than being a 50 year old intern....

I guess I look at it this way: the only good reason to leave a well paying secure job like Fick’s would be to compete for national titles. He won’t do that at UNC or Kansas. Wait for a great job. Be like Dantonio or Kelly rather than Jones.

Competitive fire and ego is not a good formula for making logical decisions - but are the core foundation of every coach.

Well, the 50 year old is still getting paid $200K/month by Tennessee until 2021. Should be enough to keep him in premium cigars until he lands a new full time gig.

Being a head coach anywhere for any amount of time seems to be better than whatever I'm going to end up doing

Winning big at UC may put some pressure from the alumni to overrule that decision. I would never say never.

RE: FYI, Louisville Athletics is in shambles
Does anyone have any idea what the max salary UC could afford to pay if CLF really warranted it? Let's say he took us to a 10-11 season this year and a NY6 next, would we be able to afford "and justify" a $3-$4 mil salary that he could get a P5? I'm no expert on athletic department budgets, but that money doesnt seem to be that much when looking at the grand scheme of things of bringing in ticket sales, TV numbers, merchandise, enrollment, etc. Increasing the rest the salary for the rest of the staff would be needed as well. Of course eventually you get outbid by the OSUs of the world, but still need to deter the Iowas and South Carolina types.

It all depends on how much the university is willing to subsidize the athletic department. Also how good attendance is...

I think that if BDF wins 10 - 12 games every year and takes us to a NY6 bowl, our administration would find a way to pay him as much as the majority of P5 schools would be willing to pay. We need that high level of success to maintain our goal of rejoining the power conferences, whereas most P5 schools simply aim to maintain their status quo.

I would think the pool for assistant salaries would be the bigger bone of contention, and will be as long as the big P5 schools are paying several million dollars to coordinators alone.

Fickle isn't leaving UC to become a coordinator at Alabama or Texas. He just left a job as coordinator at OSU to come here. So that's not really the issue.

No matter what you do, OC at OSU or Michigan is a more desirable job than OC at UC. So that's not the issue, either.

We're trying to make it so that OC at UC is equal to OC at Purdue and Kentucky. We're not there yet, but I think right now we're close enough that no one's going to leave a safe job at UC for the slight upgrade of going to a Purdue/UK type job.

Hinshaw, Gran, and Clinkscale all bolted to UK from UC, and Clinkscale took a demotion from DC to position coach just to move on IIRC. I think Fickell's salary ranks what, around 60th for college coaches in D1?

I didn't pay attention to the turnover of assistant coaches during the Dantonio, Kelly, Jones tenures. I think it was relatively low. I think the coaches in this stage are building their staffs for the long haul and the assistants realize it's best to stick with your guy and wait for the big payoff when it comes. TT couldn't generate that loyalty or cohesion because he was content where he was at (didn't have urgency to make UC better or build his resume) and the assistant coaches realized they were in a losing situation for their careers. Also, I think Fickle, Dantonio are good leaders. I think Jones knew he wasn't the same caliber and took the best gig he could get as soon as he could get it.
