Stats Guys Alert (Rocco?)
With no game this weekend, I figured the stats guys (thank you, Rocco) would have nothing to do this weekend... 03-wink (...and I simply don't have enough patience).

So, I thought I'd throw out a challenge. I'm interested in how the new Four Game - Redshirt Rule is affecting us this season. With only two games to go, obviously, anyone who hasn't played more than 1-2 games is safe from losing the red shirt year.

How many freshmen are safe? How many have already (Sorsdal) lost the redshirt year and how many are on the edge?

Our next game might be a golden opportunity to use those freshmen, that are not in any danger of losing the year, to get some "on tape" activity for the future coach.

Just Curious.

Sorsdal and Zyquan Bessant will not redshirt. The others who are close are Jack Erwin and Marcus Crowell. Ryan Poole played for the first time at URI and blocked a punt.

SE, do you think the staff will use the "safe period" (last couple games) to get those other guys some action?

If playing the freshman give the team a chance to win, play them. If they don’t, don’t play them.

There’s a chance for a 5-5 record, two more wins for Coach Laycock.

Exactly, 5-5 is a respectable record especially considering our results last year. With so many current contributors returning next year, if we are in these next two games the best players should be playing, they need the continued experienced more than a freshman and the program(and Coach) need the wins.

If the games are out of reach one way or the other then yes it would make sense to let some other guys get game experience.

Not homer fan talk...we should win our final two games. And, if we do anything but pound the hell out of Richmond at home for Jimmye's final game, I will be distraught.

I disagree from a program perspective. I understand that JL is leaving, but who cares about the record. I assume he wants to leave the program in good hands. Give some kids who you really think will step up next year a little taste of the big field and game time without burning a redshirt. Even if it is on special teams.

RE: Stats Guys Alert (Rocco?)
Just checking the stats page, here's what it looks like with the freshmen listed on the roster:

Ryan Poole (1 game)
Marcus Crowell (3 games)
Jack Erwin (4 games)
Zyquan Bessent (7 games)
Colby Sorsdal (8 games)

I don't think any other freshmen have played unless the stats page is lying to me or I've lost the ability to read. Crowell played the first 3 games but hasn't played since; Erwin's played the last 4 games.

I would say the players care about the record. The seniors who have given 4-5 years care. There’s a bid difference between 3-7 and 5-5 especially since last year they finished 3-8.

Many of these freshmen are on the scout team, they haven’t taken reps in practice other than the opposing teams plays. They’ll be fine, they’ll have their entire year next year to get ready. If they were ready for play this year, they’d have played already.

The program needs a 5-5 season more than it needs to get a couple guys a couple reps.

Not to be a downer - but for the sake of accuracy: we were 2-9 last year. That reinforces your point even more.

Interesting article on what Coach Robert Prunty (HU) is doing with the new Red-shirt Rule, including with older player and not just freshmen.

http://enewspaper.dailypress.com/html5/d...ad92f77671

I wonder if we are considering this for any of our guys, who have not previously redshirted.

RE: Stats Guys Alert (Rocco?)
So....If Paul misses a significant part of the season due to injury, do we only use him in the CAA Tourney, request a 6th year waiver to use his 4th season of eligibility, and use that second 2019 schollie for him next year while he finishes his 3rd year of law school?? Not sure that already using a first year redshirt stops that.

If we are fortunate to win the Tourney, then let Paul decide if he wants to play in possibly one NCAA game, or take a chance at a waiver to come back for a full season with an absolutely loaded team. I would dare the NCAA to deny a 6th year waiver, considering Paul's academic uniqueness and the bad story it could generate.

I think Quinn will become a needed part of the rotation this year, if Paul is out a while. If he doesn't, then a redshirt year would help to balance the classes.
