So many outsiders miss why this would be such a captivating movie, and why the rallying cry was "Free UAB". Unfortunately, the movie won't be made until UAB is free, because the rights to the name and story would never be allowed by the BoT because they would look so bad.

The movie doesn't start the day Watts closes the program. It starts before UAB even has football, probably with Gene Bartow and Paul Bryant in a smoke-filled room.

That's a nice article.

My only complaint is that he leads the reader to believe that "FREE UAB" came from this situation, but of course, that battle cry is older than that. I believe it came from the 2011 on-campus stadium denial with no vote and no discussion based on Paul Bryant Jr.'s decision to can it.

Maybe it is even older than that.

Still, it's a minor detail, and I'm thankful for the coverage of our story!!

The Free UAB rallying cry came from Black Friday back in 2001. It gained a lot of steam after the stadium deal when people realized that it isnt being paranoid if they really are out to get you.

Thanks! I thought that might be the case. It seems like its widespread use took off in 2011.

Before the formal "FREE UAB" movement, as early as the early 1970s, there was growing dissatisfaction within UAB with the Tuscaloosa school administration trying to stifle course offerings at UAB. It was like the "Crimson Campus" didn't think anything would change when the "B'ham Extension Center" became UAB in that most upper class undergrad courses and most grad courses would have to be taken in Tuscaloosa. They saw it as protecting their "territory". The rise of UAB sports programs only made this insecurity in Tuscaloosa worse.
