Iron Indian Aubrey Fitzgerald
My father Aubrey Fitzgerald, one of the dwindling number of Iron Indians, will be laid to rest today. His love of the College of William and Mary and its sports teams was unbounded. He will miss the Homecoming Game this Saturday for the first time in 68 years. While he did not make a game this season, his last Tribe football memory will be of the comeback win against Albany which he watched on TV. Go Tribe!

Your dad was the person who called me to tell me I got into W&M. I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. We met your parents in the Orlando airport in 1990, when W&M played UCF in the I-AA playoffs. They were so nice to us. They figured (correctly) that money was tight for us, so they drove us around in their rental car, so we wouldn't have to use taxis.

Your dad was from Waynesboro, and he would always ask me if the leaves were changing in the Valley. Even at the opener in August! I would always say, "Any day now!"

He exemplified the phrase, "One Tribe. One Family."

Son-

Thanks for thinking of us folks who post here to share your sad news.

Some knew your dad, and they have posted accordingly.

Some of us did not know your dad, including me.

But for all of us who love William and Mary, and love the people who have walked the bricks in W'burg, your dad was one of us, and your dad gave back. His passing is a loss for our community.

A life well-lived!

My condolences to you, your mom, and your family.

My dad is from Waynesboro. 8 years younger than your dad.

RE: Iron Indian Aubrey Fitzgerald
Aubrey Fitzgerald was as fine a person as you would ever hope to meet. Every time I talked with him over the years I came away feeling better and looking forward to seeing he and Shirley again.

He was an Iron Indian and loved William and Mary with a passion few of us have ever seen. He may have played sixty-five years ago but his interest and support of William and Mary and W&M Athletics was as fresh as the day he played his final game.

Aubrey will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

So sorry to hear of your loss and so fitting the last game he watched was the win over Albany. My prayers are with you, your Mom plus the family.
